Stush: Yes, I got them just yesterday! :) I meant to e-mail you, but I apparently forgot... *oops* The monstrose is cuuuuuuuute! What are the other two? The cactus-looking one, is it a type of Euphorbia? And the aloe-looking one, well, is it an aloe? They're both lovely. Since nobody has any roots right now, I potted all three in pure perlite; once we have some roots going, I'll repot in a gritty mix. Thanks so much! I love them all!

There is the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. They do have a system of Natural areas called the San Antonio Natural Ares that are good hiking and viewing. Schertz Texas has a good cactus nursery on the out skirts of San Ann called Pauls Desert. It probably is not as good as what you have available in California, I would imagine.

Here is a good link for you for gardens and natural areas. I am more of a Austin girl so I not that familiar with things down there. There is a good nursery north of San Antonio in New Braunfels called Hill Country Gardens , used to be Schumachers, that every one raves about but it is not expressly for cactus. The elizabeth Ney art museum is pretty cool, but that is a bit off topic.

Wanton: Ooh, thanks for the suggestions! I will definitely have to check them out. That first place you mentioned carries Astrophytum, so that'll be my first stop. :)

How long will you be in the area and will you be driving around or is this purely a San Antonio areatrip. If you have time to cruse the State park system has some jewels close by.

The creeks are limestone are the true beauty of this area. West of San antonio is western in feel and starting to get arid and East of San Antonio feels southern. The country changes very quickly at this point. Medina river, Guadalupe River, and if one is up for a 1 hour drive there is Enchanted Rock which is a large granite Batholith. Dumb name but cool place.

Wanton: Too funny you are! :) I'm not sure how much freetime I'll have and how far away I'll be able to travel. A friend is graduating from National U or U of Phoenix or ITT Tech or one of those schools, and I'm going to support and congratulate her. Probably fly in on the 10th, be there the 11th, and fly back on the 12th. (I have class the 9th and the 13th.) But I definitely want to hit up at least one place with C&S so I can take some pictures, if not take some plants home with me.

I don't remember seeing too many C&S in San Antonio apart from yucca and some large agaves. I was quite surprised at the amount of tropical plants in the River Walk area though.

People in Austin are much more into the Xerics than those in San Antonio, but after these last few years, more people are thinking about it. I think the natives are more the north mexican and Texas plants than the classic desert plants. Natives are catching on but most people would still rather die with a hose clenched in their claws.

Wanton: I hear ya on the lawn fanatics. We have the same thing here where I live. Folks here spray down their driveways and sidewalks. And then there's an uproar when the cost of water goes up. Go figure. %P

Me, I live in the country and what grows or doesn't grow is what I have.I have not mowed in over 15 years.

I don't know if you're there long enough - I believe the next Cactus and Succulent Society of America biennial convention is in San Antonio in 2013.

HMMMM. I will have to keep my eye on that one.
