And I know what you mean about the host plants dying in the heat - here, only rue and mock-bishop's weed stay healthy in summer.
I've got quite a few black swallowtail chrysalids - one has already emerged too early, so hopefully, the others will emerge at a good time when the host plants are plentiful.

Yes I love those BST cats, hate that we don't get them all year.
The rue makes it here for the most part, but I never seem to be able to grow enough of it. I've found mock bishop weed (or something like it) around and it dies out in the late summer too. One day its all over, the next it's gone. I don't think it is actually mock bishops weed, but one of the variety of weeds that closely resemble it. They do eat it, if I can find it when they come in July, whatever it is.
It was funny last year I happened across an article about native plants/weeds which specifically mentioned one of those plants that is a bst host, and pictured a great field of it, AND went on to tell where it was. So I went by there and by this time it was all dead. (it was one of those little monthly circulars that by the time you read it some of the stuff is ancient history, as in this case!) Thought it was too good to be true!
