i have no luck with large desert roses...

I have three small DS' that are doing well. Whenever I get a larger one, though, they fail.

My new large one was healthy, with no rot when I unpotted it. i let it sit to heal, then potted it up in a gravel, lava rock, perlite mix with a little pine bark. let it sit for an additional two days. by this time, it had already started dropping leaves and the trunk was springy, but not rock hard.

watered it in yesterday, the down hill trek continues. doesn't seem as if it picked up any water.

are larger plants more finicky?
