Would that be Broadleaf Plantain (Plantago major)? It seems kind of odd (to me) to be ordering it from a seed catalog. It grows wild - at least around here - in most places where you don't fight it. Come to think of it, it grows in the lawn in a playground near here much more thickly than in our yard. I wonder if that is because they probably spray to try to kill these and other "weeds" there. We don't fight them in our yard, and they don't grow much in the lawn. Plantain is a very useful plant, though, even though it is considered to be a weed by many. The main use I have heard of it for is to chew a leaf slightly and put it on bee stings to take out the pain.

Jmcat, I have Plantago lanceolata, and the Buckeyes here in Okla. do use it for a host plant. It can be a lil invansive, but is easy to pull up and transplant, or put in pots to feed the Buckeyes in cages.

Keep an eye on your Broadleaf this summer, and see if they use it there.

The plantain that I got was a start from someone. I had been unsuccessful in finding it growing locally, though I had seen some in OKC. I would have gladly paid for seeds, if I had not found the plant. I am glad to have it. It hosted numerous Buckeyes the last couple of summers.

What I do not understand is my inablility to grow "Cudweed". Twice I have been given starts, and twice I have killed it. Unfortunately, the 1st time we had triple digit temps and drought. The 2nd time, we had floods. The 1st time I put it in full sun with good drainage, and the 2nd time morning sun with good drainage. Next time, I may just plant it in the grass!!!

Any advice on where to plant it? Have you had success with transplants? Is it biennial? When I lose the lower basal leaves, it dies. Perhaps it needs to be planted in late fall, or early spring since it is more of a spring weed that dies back in the heat? Anyone have seeds???

Linda- That sound like me and Sulphurs! I have seen an egg get laid and have brought the 1 egg in to raise last summer and the summer before. However, neither have survived to adulthood. 2 years ago, I accidentally dropped the lid to the container the caterpillar was in. Unfortunately, the caterpillar happened to be on the lid at the time, and got several cuts. The one this past summer was pretty small, and decided to go through one of the holes on the lid of the saltshaker that I was using for holding water. The first time it was still alive when I found it and fished it out, but I guess it drowned the second time. Hopefully I get another chance this summer with different results!

I have a small passion vine that I can send. The mother plant was growing wild and I dug up a small runner plant, just to see how it would do. I also have mexican petunia, if you want more of that. I can possibly find an elm seedling or 2. And I have sweetgum seedlings (they pop up everywhere!)

Okay; black cherry, tulip, sweet bay and willow all grow wild here. I will have to wait until spring is a little farther along before i can make positive id on them with the exception of the sweet bay as it's evergreen. I'll start looking for some of it right away The willow is starting to bud out now. please let me send you some of it as it is VERY plentiful around our pond.
