Country Gardens magazine looking for butterfly gardeners

Greetings everyone!

Butterfly gardeners, you may have an opportunity to share the beauty in your

yard and inspire others to create butterfly habitat.

I am forwarding a request from Donna Talley, editor for Country Gardens

magazine. She is planning an article on butterfly gardening for her

magazine and is looking for gardens planted specifically to attract

butterflies that are located in residential, preferably rural, settings in

New York or adjacent NE states. She would like to photograph gardens in

late spring or early summer, 2007.

If you have a potential garden and are interested in helping with the

butterfly gardening article, please e-mail Donna at

Please feel free to forward this message to other butterfly gardeners.

I think that we should ALL e-mail her, and encourage her to use representations from all over the U.S., as opposed to just limiting it to the N.E. She has no idea the depth of our knowledge base, or how far our range of butterfly gardeners are.

Linda, I completely agree.

While I would love to share with her since I'm in CT, my tiny backyard really precludes the planting of most host plants, so I always concentrate on nectar plants which draw the greatest number of butterflies.

Do you think she would be interested in the Connecticut Butterfly Association Garden at Lighthouse Point in New Haven, CT? I just got my newletter with a write-up about how successful it was last summer.( I have yet to get there, but hope to volunteer there this year.)

Or is she only interested in backyard-type garden?

Hi! I love it that you're working with kids. I teach "recycle" classes to kids in my part-time job. Anyway, I have hummingbird mixed seed from Dollar General. I bought it fall 2011 so it was packaged for 2011, not 2012. It's a mix of adonis aestivalis, centaurea cyanus, cheiranthus allionii, cheiranthus cheirri, coreopsis tinctoria, cosmos bipinnatus, delphinium consolida, dianthus barbatus, dracocephalum moldavica, gypsophila elegans, theris umbellatum, lavatera trimestris, linum grandiflorum, linaria maroccana, malope trifida, papaver rhoeas, phlox drummondii, saponaria vaccaria, silene armeria. If you'd like it email me your address and I'll send it out to you. My favorite flower is Gaillardia and I'd send you some seed for that, too (and it's perennial). I've been looking for Ma's Glass Slipper and Ma's Butterfly Garden for awhile now and every time I try to order them from Rob's they are unavailable! I have kohlerias, episcia and many violets available to trade, mostly leaves/stolons but I have some plantlets as well. If you have one or both of these violets email me! Let me know what you are interested in trading for as well. :)

Sounds like you're off to a good start, Shannon! You might want to plant some additional milkweed, as I've found that the Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa) really doesn't attract the Monarchs to lay eggs, but it is supposedly a great nectar plant (I can't grow the stuff, drat!). Other hosts you might want to plant (you're in the Midwest, east of the Rockies, right?), are fennel, dill, or curly parsley for the Black Swallowtails. Also, Rue, if you can find it locally. Pipevines (which you will almost certainly have to order because they are rarely found in nurseries, if at all) for the Pipevine Swallowtails. Check out the website, www.butterfliesandmoths.org and click on "Maps". Then click on your state and you will get a list of the butterflies that frequent your area. The maps will indicate the part of the state (counties) that you are most likely to find a certain species. It will also tell you the host plants (if you click on specific species of butterflies) for that butterfly and where they are more likely to be found, e.g., woods, open fields, gardens, etc. I use this a lot. Not all of them are updated, but I have noticed that it has recently been updated with newer photos (live butterflies, where it used to be a lot of pinned specimens). I picked one of these up a the store a few days ago, only because this article was mentioned on the front cover of the magazine. Great article and really nice pics. Made me suggest to my husband that sometime when we drive down to visit my son (in Rochester, MN) that Flying Frog Farm would only be a daytrip from there :-)

I'd say we need to have them go out to Mike's Camelot, FOR SURE! He and Karen have created such a fabulous haven for butterflies and birds alike (not to mention HUMANS!) that I think the journal would have a marvelous time out there. :) The only problem right now is that they both may be out of the country on a safari...hehehe

Yes, that would be the PERFECT place. I had forgotten that they had gone out of the country. Isn't it WV? I wonder if that would come close to be considered northeast?

A recent Birds & Blooms magazine had a photo of an amazing 1/3 acre butterfly garden in the shape of a butterfly!

Don't we have anyone in the NE that butterfly gardens? Pennsylvania, Connecticut? I bet Maryann knows of some gardeners in Connecticut with her association to the Butterfly group there.

I thought we had someone in Maryland, too? Am I just dreaming again?

I'd volunteer our place but I doubt that a small 20'x30' garden is going to impress anyone. Also, if I'm working soon and they'd want to come during the week, I doubt if they'd let me off of work for that and I'm bad at lying. lol If I'd have more planted here, I'd think about contacting the magazine, but being that I just started last year, I really don't have a whole lot.
