petal splitting/ unnatural opening on 'san remo'

I ordered a couple bulbs for a friend from JS. Her "san remo" has opened first scape with horrible splitting of petals and petals which appear to be fused. She has a digital camera and I have requested she take pics if nothing else but to send to JS. Am I right to assume this would be a dormancy issue and the company would be responsible? She has cared for it in a typical fashion and even if she weren't "perfect" I assume (?) that imperfect blooms would be more likely to be a storage and dormancy issue. Am I right? She is understandibly dissapointed and I also feel responsible as her amaryllis "instigator". Any input from you wonderous forum participants is so appreciated in advance. How I value this forum!
