What's New With Everyone?

Hi everyone,

Sorry I haven't been around lately. Life's been pretty busy lately (long story) but gardening has been keeping me hanging in there, with getting new houseplant cuttings this week and last week and some seeds awhile back . Not sure how much trading I'll be doing this year (as a newbie last year, it was a complete blast!), but I do have some containers saved already :).

This evening, I saw a hummingbird moth on my ironweed. What a pretty plant! I'm definitely saving seeds off of it!

I have a Monarch chrysalis I found (found 5 cats on my tropical milkweed) and keeping inside until it hatches. It's still green but I hope it gets on it's way soon.

How is everyone and their gardens doing? Has anyone made up their seed wish lists yet? I have mine started but I need to jot down more ideas ;).

Good to see you back. I have 7 blackswallowtail cats myself right now. The cats themselves are beautiful and HUNGRY. I had a large pot of flatleaf parsley which they devoured in no time. Can't wait to see the butterflies in the spring.

Folks should start putting together want lists so we can try to fill them. Let us know what you need.

Congrats on the black swallowtail cats! I planted parsley but I didn't notice any caterpillars eating it. I must not have planted enough of it.

Here are some of the seeds I'm looking for:

I live in the the southern portion of western Mass, and so far I've harvested about 15 zucchini, 3 yellow squash, pickling cukes, and lettuce. The green beans and beets are almost ready and the potatoes and tomatoes are coming along very well. I think this spell of hot weather we had a few days ago really helped everything grow. Still have multitudes of zucchini that were small 2 days ago, should be ready tonight. Way far better growing season than last summer. Very Happy....should be doing lots of canning next month. Diane

They like average moisture with good drainage, mine just had way too much with that drain keeping the soil too wet but I'd planted it there because it was a moist spot and I'd read they like that. They also do well in partial sun. I sowed mine --warm temps in cups with plastic bags on top to keep moist-- in winter in a sunny window but you can sow in spring, they come up in about 10 days or so. Now that you brought it up, I decided sow some more to plant in some spots that get sun for only a few hours and see how they do. mxk3, first year with no blooms is fairly typical for perennials. By the end of the first year you should have a nice sized plants with good root systems though. I imagine keeping them a bit on the dry side in winter further north would be good so make sure it has good drainage. We had thick ice one year and I lost one to rot on the north side of the house.

Rebecca, Congrats on the Big Beefs! Any day that the dewpoint starts that high usually is not a good day. We 'almost' had a good day yesterday. Our dewpoint started high like yours but slowly fell all day long. Unfortunately I guess it didn't fall far enough fast enough. Our forecast said our max heat index would be 102 (compared to the previous day's 110) but they were wrong---it still hit 106. Still, 106 was better than 110. To me, when the overnight low is 80 or above, that's also a bad sign, and we've already had that this week too, though it is more common for nights in late July or early August to stay that hot. Jennifer, I agree. These hot nights aren't giving us much of a break. With fall tomatoes, I prefer to get them planted in late June or no later than the first week of July. Mid-June is even better. You want the plants to be large and in bloom when the daytime highs fall back into the right range for fruit set. Exactly when that happens will vary from year to year, but often it happens for much of the state around mid-August when the early August heat rampage breaks. My experience is that most people in OK plant them too late and don't get a lot of ripe fruit from them for that reason. Beans do not produce well in heat, and often do not produce at all in the heat. That is why we plant them so early here (April, and at my end of the state, in late March in a warm Spring)---we have to beat that heat. They drop blossoms without setting beans once the temperatures get up into the 90s and stay there consistently. The time to plant pole beans for fall production would be mid-July and the time to plant bush beans for fall production would be around August 10. Spider mites also are a big issue on bean plants in hot weather, which is another reason that beans don't do well as a hot weather crop here. If you like to grow Lima beans, I have found that they produce much better in the heat than snap beans do. We have had frosts as early as the end of September some years, but I don't think that has happened in a long time. It did happen our first year here.....and is another reason I have invested all that money in floating row covers. You can cover up your fall crops on the night of the first 1 or 2 freezes and often that's all you have to do---just get them through that first oddly cold night or two and then we'll have another 4-6 weeks of warm weather during which time your plants will be producing like gangbusters in autumn's milder weather. I didn't do much in the garden yesterday, just harvested enough bush beans to put up three pints in the freezer, and harvested more tomatoes (an everyday thing at this point). I've been staying busy on these hot afternoons processing the produce for fresh eating or freezing or canning so that nothing piles up too much and becomes an insurmountable mountain of produce that I dread processing. I don't think I'll do anything garden-related today. I need a day off, and I need to go to the store and run errands and all that stuff. Plus, there's rain in the forecast although our chances for today are really low. I think our big rain here won't come until Sunday night, possibly in the overnight hours. Our local TV met showed us the predictor model he uses and it showed the rain getting here really late, and he said he didn't believe it and thought it was 'off' and that we'd likely see rain 6 or 7 hours earlier than the predictor said. That would be Sunday evening and not Monday morning like the predictor model was showing. Maybe tomorrow morning I'll harvest whatever tomatoes are at the breaker stage or beyond, and any other produce that is ready. That way I'll at least get everything up into the house before the rain comes again to try to ruin the tomato flavor and make them all crack. Jennifer, We don't usually buy tomatoes in any form except I'll buy organic sauce and organic paste if making/canning Annie's Salsa in large quantities because they are part of the recipe that makes it the best home-canned salsa ever. They give it a texture like popular purchased salsas and I never was truly happy with home-canned salsas until I found Annie's Salsa. Hopefully, my days of canning large quantities of salsa are behind me now because I burned out severely on that in the years I was making almost 300 jars per year so Tim could give them away at work at Christmas time. Now I just make it in small quantities for us, so the canned organic tomato sauce and paste I have in the pantry now will last us forever. I no longer make and can catsup, bar-b-q sauce, pizza sauce, etc. either, and I have no regrets. It was great doing that when I grew gazillions of tomatoes and had to use them up, but now that I grow significantly fewer, I no longer feel like I have to slave away in the kitchen all day every day during peak tomato season and I'm more than okay with that. Been there, done that, over it. lol. If I'm not making salsa, I don't use purchased tomato sauce or paste because it is just so easy to cook down preserved tomatoes and make pasta sauce or tomato soup from scratch. I was just looking at the tomatoes on the kitchen counter last night and thinking I might make La Madeleine's tomato-basil soup this weekend. It is a very popular soup from the bakery/sandwich shop of the same name in Fort Worth, and I suppose the recipe has been around since at least the 1980s. It is so simple to make and so tasty. The local Fort Worth Star Telegram food writers use to publish the recipe every year in the newspaper because people couldn't get enough of it and wanted to make their own. So, having raved about how good it is and how simple it is to prepare, here's the recipe: La Madeleine's Famous Tomato-Basil Soup A great way to have this soup and to use up more of those tomatoes piling up on the counter is to pair it with BLT sandwiches or wraps. We really don't like grocery store canned veggies either, much preferring frozen or fresh ones. In general I don't like the texture of home-canned vegetables either other than pickled products, so that is why I don't can veggies except for some tomato products. Every now and then, like maybe twice a year, we'll buy a can of Rotel tomatoes/peppers and Velveeta cheese because Tim is craving Rotel dip. We don't make it often enough that I think it is worth my time to can our own Rotel type peppers and tomatoes, but there are canning recipes out there for people who want to make their own. If we made our own Rotel style peppers and tomatoes I guess one batch would last us about 3 years. I do remember the mama cat and kittens. I don't know what it is like in your neighborhood, but in our rural area, the smart cats learn quickly to hide and stay put up at night. Those are the ones that survive. The ones, whether feral or pet cats, that stay outdoors at night tend to live short lives. I have tried and tried to tame the feral cats and kittens and get them to sleep in the garage at night and they just won't do it. The mama cats will keep the kittens in there for a few weeks, but being feral in nature, they abhor human things and don't like being closed up. In our area, it usually is the coons that get the cats. Coons are horrifically vicious killers, and I hate having them around. I'm sure bobcats and coyotes get their share of outdoor cats, but they don't openly hang out in your yard trying to catch them all that often. The coons will be out there every night, and sometimes during the day. Our pet cats are taught from Day 1 that they have to be indoors before dark. The yellow canna with orange speckles could be Yellow King Humbert or if it is a dwarf variety then maybe Golden Lucifer. There are a ton of cannas that look like that and nowadays they have been corrupted and lost their original names and often are sold under various other names, which makes it all so confusing. Nancy, I hope that Jerry makes a quick recovery. There are some upper respiratory infections that cats get that are highly contagious and spreads quickly among cat families. Most upper respiratory infections in cats are caused by either feline calcivirus or feline herpesvirus. Most healthy cats recover just fine but it can take them a way to get over it. Larry, Groundhogs are one thing we do not have this far south and I am glad. I hope yours doesn't do too much damage. When we visit Tim's family in PA, you see dead groundhogs along the rural roadways and highways everywhere just like you see dead armadillos alongside roads in TX and, to some extent, OK. I understand that groundhogs can be very destructive. Tim said they had to fight them hard to keep them out of their garden when he was a teenager. I'm getting ready to head out into the garden in just a minute in an effort to beat the heat/heat index. I thought I had a bad day yesterday with all the heat and such, and then Tim came home from work where they had had a bomb (unexploded) in a vehicle, long story, and he had the phone glued to his ear all night long as the ATF and FBI continued to deal with that car and a second bomb found as they were attempting to deal with the first one. It really had nothing to do with the airport, other than the fact that a stolen/recovered rental car from some other city was towed to one of the rental car lots there because it belonged to that rental car company and that set off the whole chain of events. Every time he got off the phone, it rang again....and his division doesn't even include the bomb squad, but his patrol officers were assisting. On a day like that, it is like his job is 24/7 and he cannot even enjoy a nice dinner at home followed by a walk with the dogs. In other news, y'all know that last year was horrible with so many of our neighbors in particular, and a handful of relatives, getting very sick and dying, one after another after another. All of 2019 has a big black cloud over it that we'll never forget. Now 2020 is trying to make a repeat of that year. Just last week we lost our next-door neighbor/friend after a brief battle with stage 4 cancer, and now another dear friend/neighbor is hospitalized with double pneumonia and the phone call we got last night said they were calling in all the family to come see her while they still can, so that sounds a bit ominous. We all have to enjoy our good health, y'all, and not take it for granted because as long as you have decent health, you have everything. In horrible local news, Covid-19 cases in the Texoma region comprised of counties along both sides of the river are up 50% this week over last week (but not in our specific county). We'll be staying home more than ever while this new surge is happening. In our part of Texoma, it seems worse on the Oklahoma side while a few counties further east and still in the Texoma region, it seems worse on the Texas side. Tim must love this pandemic (not really, I'm being silly) because it is keeping me at home so I'm not out gallivanting around spending money shopping. I'm glad we were able to get out and plant shop last weekend because I don't know if I'd want to do the same this week. Well, I might. At least plant shopping can be done outdoors where you're not confined in a enclosed air space, so I feel safer at an outside garden center, for example, than inside a grocery store. Dawn

I have a bunch of swallowtail cats now, too, Bakemom - re-sited one that was eating my parsley to my big bronze fennel plant, where the rest of his buddies were - I need my parsley for pesto!

Hi Brad,

So you're a young/old WS pro going into year 2, right? I sure wish I could say I'm more organized with this year's seed harvest but I'd be lying if I made that claim. One exciting thing that's "new" on my little green acre is that the hardscaping in La Musardiere is finished. There's 1,440 lbs of granite in front of the bench:

Several dozen WS perennials are just waiting to get planted where the edges of the bed curve away either side of the bench. I planted a dwarf fountain grass at each end of the bench for contrast in texture. There are already a dozen mature peonies, 30 clumps of daylilies, sedum, Russian sage, rose of Sharon, Echinacea & some ancient bleeding heart growing behind it.

I've got several seeds from your wish list already packaged up to send to Bakemom. I'm drooling over your Ironweed. Will you be collecting seeds from it? And if so, will you be trading? That's the one plant I've been coveting each time I drive along the highway and see that rare flash of deep purple.

I've got 12 BST cats--Make that 10. Two are now chrysalises. I don't find them nearly as hungry as the Monarchs. And I have noted that mine ignore the parsley and only touch the fennel and dill. Even when I put parsley in the containers, they only ate fennel and dill.

I'm seriously considering a major garden overhaul this year. I've been letting things self seed for several years, because the butterflies prefer seedlings for laying eggs. And I was letting the garden fill in and mature. But, now things have gotten even more disorganized than even I appreciate. So, I'm thinking of tearing out many established plants in order to replant things in a more organized fashion. That being said, it looks like it might be a busy wintersowing season for me. Oh, darn! Can you tell how sad that makes me? :) Good luck to everyone!

Gardenweed, yep that's the best way to describe me! I love the garden bench! It will look spectactular when all the perennials are planted around it!

Martha, I'm going to try to collect the seeds/seedheads off of my ironweed. Just was outside and a Monarch was perched on some of the flowers :). I will be trading this year with other members (and I will be participating in this year's Zone Wars too) but just figuring out when to send out seeds to people is the hard part. Just waiting to get seeds now, then I need to stock up on baggies and Post-It notes.

I love it, too, gardenweed. Nice job. I saw just one cat and don't know what it was, think it not Monarch or ST so let it be.

Got a lot of spots cleaned out, my dianthus planted (probably too close together), dug out some roses that weren't doing anything, collected some pin oak leaves from the neighbor's trash and stashed them, figured out I'd peg my roses in the hopes of getting better displays and more satisfaction out of them, stuff I've pulled up piled up in 3 places, used stuff with no seeds in it for temporary mulch.

Decided what to do with my tree stump. Put hosta all around it, then set containers in season and put my ws'ing out of season hoping it will drain better. Will full sun hurt it?

Also, does anybody know if I can root some rosemary from the fresh herbs you can buy at the store? I don't know if I like it but like the looks of it. Yes, I want to make pesto, too, but will use lots of basil and parsley, will use a recipe I found. Hope I saved it. I don't have a food processor so have to chop and snip.

Since we're on the subject of butterflies, I found this Monarch (I think it's a female) eclosing on a pot of WS forget-me-nots this afternoon. She is still there!

Well, as for plants, I've been collecting seed - Salvia 'Lady in Red', 'Coral Nymph', and 'Yvonnes', Bronze fennel, and a few others.

Just got a big order from Bluestone last week, back-ordered and replacement plants, and they look great! Added them to the pot ghetto, which consists of mostly winter-sown plants, and need to figure out where to plant all this stuff.

Glad to hear everybody's enjoying the butterflies! This summer I got completely absorbed in raising butterflies - I've released over 100 Monarchs with about 20 more chrysalises, about 10 Black Swallowtails with 2 chrysalises that are going to over-winter, and 1 Spicebush Swallowtail with 7 chrysalises that look like they're going to over winter.

And my spring-sown and direct-sown annuals have done spectacularly this year! Here's a pic taken 3 days ago -

Hi Brad, good to hear from you. I'm at school. I got alot of essays to write. I've found a lot of caterpillar in my garden yesterday. Not sure if they are Swallowtail or not.

You all get me so excited w/ all this butterfly talk :) I'm hoping next year is THE year that I'll have all my butterfly attracting flowers in the garden bed and blooming.

LOVE that bench gardenweed!

Terrene your flowers are gorgeous!! I'll be doing my first big zinnia bed this year. Seeing yours motivates me even more. :) What is the super tall orange flower to the right of the zinnia bed? Is the small yellow flowers in front of the zinnias melampodium?

I've been digging things out all week and re-designing the main beds and pond feature. All the more excuses for more items to WS! *wink wink*

Thanks Wendy! I'm really excited about WS more butterfly attracting perennials again this year that I can plant near my bench where they'll get full sun. The bench faces a curved free-form bed I specifically designed 4+ years ago to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. A couple of weeks ago I brought the southern edge of it out another 2 ft. to accommodate the most recent bunch of WS perennials I grew this year and wanted to add to what's already planted there.

I've been busy harvesting seeds from the plants I WS the past couple of years so my seed inventory is growing by leaps & bounds. If anyone wants Joe Pye Weed seeds, the neighbor next door has a gorgeous plant and I can harvest as many seeds as it produces.

Gardenweed, your bench garden looks like it's coming along beautifully! Do you have any butterfly host plants in your butterfly garden?

Wendy, the tall orange flowers next to the Zinnias are Tithonia rotundifolia, Mexican Sunflower. It is a fabulous nectar plant for butterflies, bees, and even the hummers nectar on it regularly. The yellow flowers are indeed Melampodium. I love those - they are actually a Florida native and attract lots of little bees. So easy to collect seed too, and they self-sow a bit too. There is actually some tropical Milkweed (Asclepias curassavica) mixed in with the Melampodium but I cut most of them for the Monarch caterpillars.

Whenever I look at these colorful flowers, I feel more cheerful. Most of the annuals were "spring-sown" - technically not winter-sown because I sow them in early April in cups, and the Zinnias were direct-sown.

terrene - I have lots of butterfly attracting perennials in the butterfly bed but when I designed it, I was still (and still am) a novice so I can't say for sure there are host plants in it. So far there's buddleia, peony, hibiscus, meadow sage, rudbeckia, globeflower, stokesia, penstemon, gaillardia, dianthus, hardy geranium, ornamental grasses, Shasta daisy, magnolia, Echinacea and several others I can't recall just at the moment. When I designed it, my only thought was attracting butterflies. I didn't know about host plants and providing them with food at the time.

I've started adding cardinal flower and other hummingbird nectar plants to several beds on my little green acre but am still only beginning to realize what I need to grow for the butterflies & hummers to help them thrive, not just so they'll vist.
