Sorry to hear that you ended up with the wrong brugs but they all are pretty, aren't they: )Sanguinea's are one of the few whose seeds come true. I have a few plants that I started last summer. They have yet to bloom and are now dormant but I have my doubts that I'll be able to get them to flower in my zone. They supposedly like cooler temps and we have very hot, humid summers. If they get big enough I can take a cutting in the summer but you might also want to try them from seed. Many of the seed companies carry them.

Sanguineas don't do well from cuttings---seeds are better. And, as Karyn said, they DON'T like hot, humid conditions---in your zone, you probably won't get them to flower unless you keep them inside under AC during the summer.

Bummer---I can't get them to flower here in Zone 7, either!

I was going to resist getting into brugs until I had completed my Datura collection (only two species off, provided that the last people I traded with are honest), but you two had to pique my interest! Karyn, msbatt, might either of you have some of this sanguinea seed, or know of a reputable source of the seed? If the former, I'm willing to trade or do postage. I doubt that I would have anything to offer to you, Karyn, as you seem to have quite an extensive collection of trumpets (I don't blame you!), but I may have something for msbatt. I'm anxious for spring to get here so that I can plant my Datura leichhardtii and my ferox. Once I have some seeds stored up, I'm going to give a go at outlandish Datura crossbreeds, maybe bridge the gap between wrightii and discolor with leichhardtii.

Hi Bismuth. I wish I had some to trade with you but I planted all of them last season. I'm pretty sure that I got them from either T&M or JL Hudson, both are reputable seed companies. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to get blooms and even some seed pods on my Sanguineas but I kind of doubt it : ( If you get lots of extra seeds from your daturas next season please keep me in mind. I'd love to find some more of the less common varieties.

I'll certainly have you at the top of my list, Karyn. I've been pressing for quercifolia, but it seems that very few vendors offer the species, and those that do have an air about them that would suggest that they have misidentified the plant, or something like that. Ceratocaula is also a lot less popular than one would think.

Bismuth you'll have to post pics of your daturas. I've never even heard of the ones you just mentioned (off to google images). I'd love to see your collection.

padraig_1, I have a few Sangs and find that they start best in soil not water. Yes these can be started from cuttings if kept in a cool shaded area. Ours are more orange colors instead of the reds that most folks' photos. So sorry for your disappointment, just keep trying as these are really great to grow.

Bismuth, sorry, I have no sang seedds, but they're easy to find online. Have you grown ceraticaula? I had seeds once, but never could get them to germinate. Thompson and Morgan used to carry them, and I've seen them recently somewhere else---can't think where just now---but I didn't buy because of former bad luck.

Karyn, I have only cultivated wrightii, stramonium, and metel thus far, but ABADS has a nice gallery which encompasses every species of Datura. I'll attach the link.

Unfortunately, Msbatt, I have not grown ceratocaula. I wish that I could. Supposedly, the assumption that is an aquatic plant is somewhat obscured; while ceratocaula can take much greater amounts of water than most species of Datura, it does not necessarily prefer it. Food for thought.

Thanks for the info. I am going with T and M and see what happens. The winter here has been rather mild, after a real dry spell (for this part of Florida). Something must have pleased my brugs because they have all gone beserk:blooming since late November.What a treat! They're starting to calm down now, taking a rest before the next flowering season, I guess. I am trying to remember just who got me started on this "brug mania"! Can you remember who gave you the bug??

I just did a trade for B. sanguinea, but I do believe in the magic of biodiversity, so if you see anything on my list that you find interesting, I'd be happy to trade with you. I just found a packet of blue/purple Cerinthe seeds in my seed drawer about two minutes ago, so that's up for trade, too. I'm really trying to cram in the trades before spring starts!

Every sanguinea I have bought through the mail has turned out to be false. The last one I got from Van Bourgeon a few yrs ago and it took a yr to bloom and turned out to be frosty pink. If you get a cutting in the mail be sure to look carefully at the leaves. It is really hard to tell but sangs do have different leaves. Get someone who has one to mail you a good picture of thier leaves and compare them, if you have doubts send it back! It takes alot of care and time to grow these and it sucks to end up with something you already had. I grew some from seed obtained from J.L. Hudson seed awhile ago. You get alot of seeds and all mine germinated. They were actually doing great and got about 3 ft high,despite living in a hot climate until the flooding after Hurricane Rita came along. After that they were toast and just rotted away. Maybe I will try again later.

Thompson and Morgan has B. sanguinia seed. I am overwintering a plant I started from seed in my zone 5 basement. I hope it survives.

I know someone who bought sang. seeds from Thompson and Morgan and the plants don't look anything like pics of sang plants posted in this forum.

I think their supplier is misleading them.

I have a cutting off one of those plants. The leaves look just like my sauves and versi's.

My memory isn't good with respect to timebut, I think it was last year or the year before Patrick was posting some pics of hissang plants in this forum. You could always compare with them.

My experience with sangs has been less than exciting. I grew 8 plants from seeds (4 orange and 4 red) and the plants grew well. At the end of the 1rst year, they just started to Y and I got 2 blooms (pale due to the weak light at the end of Oct.). Not bad for the 1rst year. I grew them in pots and stored them in my garage over winter. Last year I continued to grow them...even here in the PNW they required filtered light or shade from late morning on. They grew on and on, but again I didn't see buds until time for frost. I do love how fuzzy these plants are, but getting them to bloom is far more difficult than any of the other brugs I've grown. I've given away all but 1 of each color and the '07 season is going to be the "make it or break it" year for the last 2.

If you have brugs you got as cuttings labeled as sanguineas, you probably have something else! Sanguineas have a reputation for being very difficult to start from cuttings. While KHT may have the right touch for making it happen, most people are going to be hard-pressed to do so.

I can certainly find better use for the space the sangs took up last year. My garden is going to be really full with all the new cuttings I acquired last fall, not to mention the 11 dozen brug seeds I started less than a month ago (already I have 67 seedlings!). The 11 hybrid crosses contain genes from a number of exciting newer cultivars. Trialing these seedlings will be a real adventure.

Patrick I feel the same way about my sangs. Depending on what they do this year will determine if I keep them. Somehow I think they'll be going bye bye in the fall. I just don't have the room to winter over a plant that doesn't do well during the growing season.

I am with Patrick on this one. I bought a huge plant (my mother's day present) and kept it indoors until it was time to get it out into my garden. Having heard that brugs do better in the ground (and I really wanted this to do well) I planted it in the garden. Well, I waited and waited all summer for one flower--but to no avail. All the work of one entire summer did not gratify me with one single flower. I feel defeated and don't know if I should ever try again.

No one has yet answered paidraig's question about Datura in pots. I have a question about that. Can Datura be grown in smaller pots than Brugs?

On the ABADS site, I cannot tell the difference between the Daturas and the Brugs. Anyone out there know which are which. Are the Daturas the ones with the trumpet pointed up?

There is only one Datura image on the above ABADS page, it is third form the left on the top row and yes, basically Datura blooms point out and upward, Brugmansia blooms point out and downward.

Jim daturas can be grown in much smaller pots than brugs. I haven't kept a container datura in anything bigger than a 5 gallon pot. Datura blooms are more upright and the stems are usually thinner and softer. Brugs are more tree-like. There are exceptions. ABADS and BGI are both good sites.

Yes they can be grown in smaller containers. I have both kinds of plants, in the ground as well in pots, I am no expert on this babies, I do like them.I am also looking for seeds for the sanguinea brug. so I will be going on line to see if I can buy some seeds, wish me luck.
