Share tips for seed collecting

Many of us are collecting, drying and packaging seed from our gardens. Let's share tips, insights from experience, new ideas. Here are a few that have dawned on me after 4 years of seed saving:

- I like to dry seeds on paper, put it doesn't have to be paper plates (which take up a lot of surface space). A sleeve of thick paper coffee cups is serving me well this year. I just make sure I "shake and mix" every day to make sure all seeds get air exposure.

- I've stopped making a seperate cup/plate for each batch of the same variety I collect. Once I have a cup for "Purple petunias" I just keep adding to it, again making sure I mix for air exposure. I won't package the seeds till 2 weeks past the date of my last deposit!

- Colanders are the best things I've used for seperating the seed from the rest. I've got lots of different sizes (from thrift stores) with the one that has fine wire mesh getting the most use for very small seeds.

What is helping you keep this process managable this year?

Nancy
