Size doesn't matter !?

Yesterday, I visited to my friend, Gift's collection. I found one of his little cute

Deuterocohnia brevifolia var. chlorantha was blooming.

Yes, this is the world's smallest Brom.

Mine never bloomed yet, but other species have done.

Its bigger sister, Deuterocohnia lotteae a red flower Deut.

Anyway, one would be surprised to realized that

there is her close brother, which has the same red colored flower,

but very bigger in size of plant, also with a very long flower stalk!

What I'm talking about is this big guy, Deuterocohnia brevispicata.

So...Size doesn't matter, they could be close relative.

That is very interesting, Chanin. I've always wondered why the former Abrometiellas got thrown in with the Deuterocohnias when the inflorescence is so different. The individual flowers, however, certainly are similar looking. Love that two-tone red and green!

Hi Chanin - Although I don't grow spineys, I always find your posts very interesting and informative, and of course supported by you excellent photography it's the next best thing to being there to look at the plants.

A lot of them are floppy the 1st year but are very sturdy after that. Molineux was a tiny flopper the first year but strongly upright after that. I can highly recommend Molineux for the excellent rust resistance, rapid repeat and productivity, and Sharifa Asma for the stunning fragrance and delicate coloring. Jubilee Celebration is arching and nodding but so very beautiful. William Shakespeare 2000 was weak the 1st year but very upright after that. Same thing with Charles Rennie Mackintosh...oh dear, I can go on and on...

what about a Japanese maple? Perhaps the dissectum weeping variety? I'm not sure if they are all deciduous or whether some are evergreen, but they sure are pretty.

I keep threatening to buy some of the little spineys but talk myself out it each time because I heard they hard to grow

Lisa, so do I, but I have heard somewhere, there is an intermediate link
Deuterocohnia scapigera, (former Abromeitiella) which has a kind of 'scape'
that's the reason why some taxonomist lumped Abromeitiella into Deuterocohnia.

BTW, I found an interesting viviparous characteristic, this long-stalked
Deut. brevispicata can produce small plants from each node on its peduncle.
