Andrew, I agree that's a very nice nudicaulis, but I think you've got the wrong name for it. It looks closer to what I have as n. v. aequalis, but there are so many nudicaulis cvs. (and hybrids) it's hard to keep them all straight.

What I know as Silver Streak is very tubular with pointed leaf tips and has no red on it. FCBS apparently agrees.

Here are a few pups from my clump of Aec. nudicaulis var aequalis.

The clump is in a touch more shade than the 'Silver Streak', but both do look very similar when grown in the same conditions. These two plants were discussed at a recent club meeting. It seems the I.D can be known when the plants flower. The var aequalis has red bracts evenly spaced, where as 'Silver Streak' do not. I guess I'll have to wait for one of my clumps to flower to confirm I.D.

While on the subject of Aechmea nudicaulis, I have a variety that was purchased years ago, as 'Venezuelana'. Its a nice plant with defined spines and silver banding. Has anyone else seen this type? Maybe it is around, but under another name.

Is it common for Aechmea nudicaulis (and cultivars) to display this much red? Few of those pictured on fcbs show any red at all, and on the few that do, it seems minimal. I really like the look of the nudicaulis pups pictured here, green 'Venezuelana' included.

I second that. If I was at that sale one of those Ae. nudicaulis would have definately gone home with me. I agree about the pics. on FCBS, which I guess are variable depending on growing conditions anyway.

Just went to the Boca BSI board meeting and got an Ae.nudicaulis v. aequalis. I think this is one in bloom. I probably would have got more plants but it started to rain pretty hard and we didn't get a chance to hack any more from the pine trees.

Here are a couple of photos of what I have labeled A. nudicaulis v. aequalis, just starting to flower - versus winterlager's berry shot. That variety of mine grows pinker in brighter light elsewhere in my garden - all epyphitic.

'Tiger', but I have also seen it labeled 'Stripes'. This one is growing compactly in very bright light - and next to it is A. nudicaulis cv. 'Xavante'(previously called A. n. rubra)

I love the many different A. nudicaulis varieties and cultivars. I grow about 10 or more different ones. These next 2 photos are of one of my favourites - but the name I bought it as is dubious - Aechmea nudicaulis cv. 'Costa Rica'. Anyone know another name for it?

I'm not sure about that plain aureorosea, the one on FCBS is green. The albomarginated one came from Michael's. La Tigra and Silver Streak I got at the Orlando World conference, so I'm pretty confident of the names of those. The first one on the bottom (green with brown blotches) is the most common variety around here. I thought maybe it was v. cuspidata but it sure doesn't match the one on FCBS. The next one appears to be just a variegated form of the same thing. The third I'd really like to know the name of, it's very smooth and different-looking. It looks kind of like one that I saw in Florida called either 'Burle-Marx' or burle-marxii, but the color is more intense dark red than that one. The last one I've heard people just call "rubra", but I don't think that has any official botanical standing. It has pale pinkish bracts.

I had 2 or 3 others too, but I don't know what happened to them. And this is not even counting all of the intra-specific hybrids I've made crossing the different forms.... ;-)

Lisa, what about Aech Xavante for the last one? I have not seen it, but it looks a lot like the one on FCBS. And as Kerry said, it was previously known as Rubra. The second last one looks a lot like one I got from Lyn just called Aech n Red Form. I will look for a picture of mine when it flowered then I will post it.

I like the albomarginated nudicaulis, and also the third from left on the bottom row. I tend to like the look of spines on Aechmeas, but the smoothness on this one is very neat. I also like the combination of the long tubular form and subtle barrel-like widening in the middle - it almost looks like it wants to close right up at the top.

This is an old scanned photo of aequalis x Silver Streak. Sorry, the color is a bit too saturated there. Some clones are reddish, others mostly silver, and none are as red as Cranberry Frost.

Here is the picture of what I got as Red Form. It was a very young pup when I got it and it did not develope very nicely. But since flowering it has given a pup which starting to develope very nice. Also, when in mid summer when it gets a lot of morning sun, it get much more black in it:

Yes, that looks the same as mine, Japie. "Red Form" doesn't sound like an official cv. name though, more likely just somebody's description, and since there are so many red forms......

Lisa, I queried Lyn, and she cannot remember where she got the 'Red form' from.

The little guy next to it, I had on GW when it was in flower to try and ger an ID. You gave me the name A victoriana as a maybe and some others agreed. Have a look at the flower again.

Okay, I remember that now. It just looks different at this stage. With most of the other Aechmeas in that subgenus (i.e. fulgens, miniata, weilbachii, etc.) if the berries start out red they stay that way. It's cute, I like the dark purple.

It looks a bit like Ae. coelestis to me. Too bad, the pictures on the fcbs site aren't terribly helpful as confirmation.

I thought you were asking about the plants flanking the nudicaulis 'red form' posted above. There aren't too many Aechmeas that have berries that ripen to such a dark, near black color. The plant in flower and fruit are dramatically different. So, I think we're talking about the same plant?
I agree with you that Japie's Aechmea pictured above is Ae. victoriana.

Paul, yes, it's the same plant. The berries are red when it blooms and then turn black-purple. That's why I didn't recognize it at first either, very unusual.
