Well worth all the effort

This weekend I installed 6 moonrays in under my Brug garden here by the patio.

I want to see what I am smelling at night LOL, and although this is a night shot with a flash, you can see why I have such a lovely fragrance drifting through the evening/night air right now. :))

Left to right: Candida Double White ( not dropping the second bloom down though), Native Habitat double orange vesicolor ( really dropping the second bloom LOL) and one EP bloom low to the right.

Beautiful, RuthAnn. You continue to be an inspiration for all of us. Any sign of budding on the P&C? Oddly enough, mine are not showing any yet. The cutting from your neighbour's yellow is just about to open with its first flower,...maybe tonight or tomorrow.

LOL, your P&C has been too busy growing John. It has sent out 6 lateral shoots off the main stem you gave me and just this w/e 4 have Y'd and I see some tiny buds on them, the other 3 will Y soon too.

I found one last spring at a discount store....there was only one nestled among hundreds of Peace, Mirandy and Fragrant Cloud. I buy all my roses from mail-order companies and try to resist the urge to look at the cheapo bodybag roses when I go shopping, but this rose spoke to me. It wasn't in the best shape, with only 2 heavily-waxed & puny canes but I considered myself lucky to have it. I can only go on last summer but it did well, considering its humble beginnings. It got about 3 1/2 feet tall and had about a dozen blooms. I don't detect much fragrance but the blooms are very large. Mine was mostly healthy all summer, and like Terry said, the Japanese Beetles weren't interested in it much. I hope it makes it through the winter, esp. considering the WAY-below zero temps. out there right now. Here's what mine looked like.... Celeste

Sam, you crack me up! You've asked this question before, I think just to get folks riled up...but the good thing is that folks like me get to hear all sides of the issue, to help us plan our ponds. Last summer, I did a lot of reading before putting in a bottom drain. I DIY'd it, with a toilet flange and 4" PVC...so far, no leaks! How do I know? Water level stays constant,except with hotter,drier weather, which I assume is evaporation. (Otherwise, the water loss would be constant) After all the reading I did, I came to the conclusion that a bottom drain would make things easier...and I want maximum enjoyment for minimum work! here are some more news why we should be gardening (organic as much as possible)and produce own vegetable at least! Recently, one of my colleague who has been diagnosed with colon cancer. He not have any bad habits, no smoking, no alcohol, very health cautious...but stuck by dread evil. By god grace he is out of danger now due to right time detection and diagnosis. While resting in hospital beds, he looked back his life style, food habits, family history, etc... he concluded that food was one of the main culprit. He wrote me five page long story about the his cancer and aftermaths...to cut the story short, I just copy/pasting some of his points on Why does one get cancer: Causes of cancer; -Environment we live in (e.g., breathing polluted air); -Genetically modified food (e.g., nearly 80% of all food sold in US super markets are genetically modified like your tomatoes, apples); -Food processing and storage (e.g., injecting chicken with antibiotics to "preserve" them; preservatives in all those tin\can food; manicured apples!!); -Polluted water (e.g., dissolved carcinogens in water from heavy industries that may never be filtered out) ...and one can go on... Another story is Parkinson's vs. Pesticides: I just come to know from Dorothy, Rotenone, a pesticide used in home gardens/farms seems to be causative factor for Parkinson's diseases... He is our own family story...My mother-in-law, but call her a mother, she is nice lady, is also suffering with Parkinson's disease.. she used to consume lot of raw vegetables/salads (of course from market) to keep in good health... but that tuned out be bad. I too guess her PD was due to lot of harsh chemical in the vegetables. The use of pesticides in food production becoming one of the biggest threat to health, mankind and nature. My mother has been diagnosed with PD in 2007, she has been treated with many Allopathy, Homeopathic, Ayurveda, and Acupressure systems. but none of these practice/medicines has freed her from PD. Now she is doing yoga, meditation, drinking wheat grass juice in the morning, and also started using stationary bike. I read some time ago in science magazine that cycling/biking will help in brain cell stimulation and blood circulation to brain which may help patients to recover faster... mother tells she feeling little better... We should encourage more and more people to start gardening, growing their own food also bring awareness about the chemical in food. Encourage (pressurize) commercial growers to producing organic food.

Thanks for the compliment there. It is worth it, but I didn't initially realize what I was getting into. If you mess up any single thing, they are toast. canokie, you have the right ideas with your soil (none, just peat moss and bark). I would guess that north of I40 you can do the northern highbush and be fine. One of the reasons I got my weather station was to keep track of chill hours and compare to budbreak dates for things like blueberries. I have 60 plants and 20 are just entering their 3rd year or so. the others are mature and have done fairly well, but this is the worst they have looked while dormant. I didn't mulch enough and left too many berries on during last summer. Still I expect to get about 120 to 150 quarts off of them this year without weather issues. Last year I kept or gave away 20 quarts and sold about 160 quarts. This way I can pay all my expenses and just have invested the time (lots) and have all the berries I can eat and a nice landscape. I broke even last year by the end of the year and now just invest about $250 annually for mulch so I need to sell 50 qts each year to break even yearly. The amount of hours I have put it is really crazy (like staying up all night with fires between rows during the late feezes). I admire people who do this for a living. I could not do it without glyphosate (bermuda) by the way.

What fun, I go out with a flash light at night, I love to see them changing colors. What a great idea. I do get so many wonderful hints from this forum. Wonder if hubby will go for this one???

I'm bad about checking on them also.The other night I was told that I could always sleep in the yard.....& I actually thought about IT!(* my ducks would proably come over and talk to me and & I'd never sleep.)

I like the double orange.hows the smell?

The double orange has a lovely fragrance that tends to perist (closeup) even in the daytime until about noon.

That is fantastic RuthAnn. The lighting must be fun having at night too enjoy. They are looking so fine and healthy. I see you also get that good old pest damage. They sure do like brugs!!! LOL

That is beautiful Ruth Ann. It is so loaded with blooms some of them are even opening upward. ( Does that mean it's part datura? LOL Talk about stirring it up. LOL.)

They tend to be horizontal John, they are above my eyelevel so you know that makes them look upward facing ROFL! ;-)

Hi Ruth Ann. Your brugs seem to be a decent height. How do you plan on overwintering them? Are you just going to take cuttings or are you storing them intact in a cool greenhouse? I have a couple that I overwintered last year at my mother-in-law's. She has a large bank of windows and they faired alright. They are about 4 feet high now and I don't think I'd get them in the truck to haul to her place again (She's in a different city). I'm trying to figure out some way to overwinter them without having to chop them up into smaller cuttings :(
Unfortunately I don't have a heated garage otherwise I'd try storing it there. Any suggestions?

cleoa, I cut mine all back to 4-6" above the soil line, dig them up and pot them and store them in a 45-50F winterhouse for the winter, dormant. Here they are last fall just after I brought them in for the winter....

That's interesting. At between 7-10C I would have thought they would start to grow. When do you bump up the temperature to get them going? Mine are already in pots. I have a small yard so the brugs are on the deck. Do you think I would have to cut them down if I can find some place cool to store them?

p.s. looks like a nice size greenhouse; something I've been pining for a long time....you lucky girl!
