Nightshades!

Next year I'm determined to actually get them right. This year I missed the potato window entirely, got my tomatoes in the ground about 3 weeks too late (and thus got no tomatoes until October), and planted my peppers in lead-bearing soil. This was my first year moving from containers to an in-ground garden bed, so I'm still making lots of mistakes.

For potatoes - plant them end of January/beginning of February? My plan is to order seed potatoes for Yukon Gold and maybe a red-skinned variety, and Parks doesn't ship to zone 8b until the end of January. If that's too late, is there a nursery in Tucson that sells seed potatoes? I looked last year, but maybe I was checking the wrong places.

For tomatoes/peppers - start seeds this month, set them out early March? I'd really like a spring/early summer tomato crop this year, as I have *never* gotten a decent crop before September/October. How early can I set them out if I mulch with black plastic and cover them during late frosts?

Thanks!
