Very pretty. Love the fringe on the dianthus, may have to give them a try.

Wow, your heuchera looks wonderful, and I love the strawberries and cream nasturtium...so pretty! I like that fringed dianthus too. I WS'ed some heuchera last year, but seem to have lost them after planting them out...I'll try them again this year.

Thanks for all the "comfort!" The little macro symbol was on the top of my Kodak, which is why I got confused, I think. In any event, got the Canon for it's larger zoom and more pixels, wish I would have waited for the newer Kodak. This Canon weighs a ton, too, and I think there is something wrong with the lens. WAH,WAH,WAH. I want to try the snow symbol too, if I can find it before the snow all melts-WOW-I am really being a whiner today! I have to go back to the grocery store AGAIN, always puts me in a negative mood-will take the thoughts of all these great pics with me!

Lovely! The drapes are wonderful. I think the fabric choice is very nice - I like it a lot better than some of the patterned fabrics we had looked at before. I think the extra pillow on the couch would be nice, but I would like to see a lighter toned fabric that reflects the lighter feel of the two chairs, perhaps even a needlepoint with a lighter background. One thing I would try is moving the couch closer to the fireplace, rather than putting it smack dab in the center of the room. I think it will create a cozier feel as a grouping with the leather chair, and will also open up that walkway in front of the two chairs a bit. Also, you will be able to get a smaller area rug to define just the space containing the leather chair, couch and coffee table, and let the chairs feel like a bit of a separate seating space. I think the room will feel wider that way. I would consider a round coffeetable, to put some curves into that area and also compliment the round mirror and london arms on the chairs. One more thought. Take the glass display cabinet that is by the entrance to the space, and angle it in the corner. It has glass sides that will not seem too bulky when it is turned, it will be a visual compliment to the tv on the opposite corner, and it will fill the space better, imo. And if that has lighting in it, use it. It will add warmth to the room over there.

Lordy. The crown for Worst Soil Test of 2015 initially goes to Prorange. Don't worry, it'll change hands again shortly. This soil has some problems (by which I mean a lot of problems) and I very much doubt your lawn is doing well at all. EC 7.8: Within normal range, most likely a soil with some sand, some silt, no clay. Resources will drain out more easily than a higher EC soil, but it has the advantage of being an easy soil to change. OM 1.95%: The high end of poor. Definitely mulch all your fall leaves, feed organically, import leaves, and so on. I'd like to see this hit 6% eventually, but that takes a long time. Raising this will raise your EC a little, plus make your pH matter less. pH 5.0: Very acidic. Although a symptom and not the disease, this is low enough that your (very high) aluminum levels are starting to unlock and become available. Aluminum is a toxin. Sulfur 44: High end, but I still have a little room to play with. Some of what I'm going to do will drop this anyway as it binds to calcium sulfate and washes out. In part, this is setting off your pH as it leaches calcium from the soil. Phosphorus 90: Low. The target here is 200. Calcium 40%: Off the charts low, severely deficient. Locate Encap or Mag-I-Cal calcitic lime and apply as below. Please note, I've slightly exceeded the recommended yearly application level, but I won't be doing that next year (you won't finish this year). This is so low that some exceptional actions are required. Some yellowing of your Bermuda may result but will go away as the calcium integrates--and you can always use Milorganite to add iron and turn the yellow back to green. Magnesium 5.1%: Low. You can purchase Epsom salt at most drugstores in the First Aid or bath sections as it finds use in both. Get the large bag, it's cheap and you'll need it. Potassium 2.2%: Although currently OK, this is about to fall off the cliff--plus the calcium and magnesium will displace some of it. Most landscape or garden shops will order potassium sulfate for you, or you can get it online (but shipping is expensive). Most minor elements: Fine, or not far enough off to adjust this year when you have much bigger fish to fry. Boron is the exception, and with all this calcium, I mentioned iron below as well. Boron 0.26: Deficient. Normally I'd ignore boron this year, but on this test, we can't. We use Milorganite as a carrier. In a wheelbarrow or the like, dump the Milo. Spraying very, very lightly with water (I use a spray bottle like the kind people use to damp their clothes when they iron) will help the boron stick. Add the recommended amount of boron and stir, spraying occasionally to get the stuff to stick to the Milo. Then apply over the recommended area. So if going for bag rate Milorganite (1 bag per 2,500 square feet), you'd add 7.5 tablespoons of 20 Mule Team Borax. Iron 114: This is fine but won't produce the best color in most lawns. Plus calcium applications bind iron, turning grasses yellow. Whenever you like, or feel the color is poor, apply Milorganite at the bag rate to gently feed the lawn and add plenty of iron. Iron levels in soil rise slowly, but there's no rush. Recommendations: April 15: Apply Encap or Mag-I-Cal lime at 4 pounds per thousand square feet. May 1: Feed with starter fertilizer (high second number) at the bag rate. May 15: Apply 2 pounds of Epsom salt per thousand square feet. May 15*: Apply 3 tablespoons of boron per thousand square feet. June 1: Feed with starter fertilizer (high second number) at the bag rate. June 15: Apply Encap or Mag-I-Cal lime at 3 pounds per thousand square feet. July 1: Apply 3 pounds of potassium sulfate per thousand square feet. August 1: Feed with starter fertilizer (high second number) at the bag rate. September 1: Feed with starter fertilizer (high second number) at the bag rate. September 15: Apply Encap or Mag-I-Cal lime at 3 pounds per thousand square feet. October 1: Apply 2 pounds of Epsom salt per thousand square feet. October 1*: Apply 3 tablespoons of boron per thousand square feet. October 15: Apply 3 pounds of potassium sulfate per thousand square feet. * I'd normally separate these two applications by some time period, but this schedule is already tight. It'll be fine, but you may not get as much of the boron to bind as I would normally hope. Again, it's not a resource we can ignore this year.

SOP's fine to go down on damp grass, and you can do it now if you want. Really, you're barely off-cycle for an app I scheduled for October 15th. Always read my dates as "somewhere kind of around this date if that's convenient for you." We can always revise the schedule if things really get off-track. Bermuda doesn't require heavy synthetic winterization and the process can actually cause damage the following spring and summer. Greening's unlikely at this point if growth has slowed significantly. However, I don't recommend keeping soybean meal (or any grain) around over the winter as the stuff is a beacon to mice and other less-pleasant rodents. Lighter organic winterization practices won't harm Bermuda, so I'd put it down. If you have shrubs, gardens, or trees, this stuff would also be very good for them at this point in the season as well. I dropped my last organics on October first (in Pennsylvania), being very certain to strike the Thuja, lilacs, trees, and other shrubs with the stuff pretty heavily.

I wsed some red heleniums a couple of years in a row but got yellow. Finally gave up and bought one. I hope the seeds it produced will give me results like yours!! Nice! :O)

I had my helenium autumnale 'Red Shades' reseed on its own and the seedlings bloomed a bunch of different colors, a few yellow, a few solid reds, oranges and red, red and yellow, etc... Unfortunately, I had to cut them all back while in bloom to relocate them or else I would have saved seeds for trading this year. Maybe next year.

topie, I was really impressed with the size of the flowers on dianthus lovelyness too. They were three inches across.
Tiffy, this is my first year with the helenium and I really like them. I got a mix of seeds and many colors, the one I showed is just my favorite one so far.
Karen, sounds like you got a nice mix. I'm sure you will see them come back just as beautifully. I need to get up on my seed saving, there is just a lot more since I stared winter sowing.

I know what you mean Karen, most of my stuff is looking pretty ragged but the Cosmos are still going strong and several others. I really need to remember how much I love my winter sown annuals and how long they last every year. Also that even when I take forever getting stuff started that just means I will have color when all the other flowers have given up for the year.

Ditto what Flood said about WS annuals. Most of my garden has gone dormant and I've cut back most of the perennials, but the cosmos just keeps getting better and better. I have cosmos plants that are just now starting to bloom and have 10-20 buds on each plant. It makes it hard to think about pumpkins and fall decorations!

I mean my stuff is literally fried. Hot, hot summer and no rain for months= fried. I can't even remember when we last had any rain, but my guess would be over 2 months. We are around 7.3" below normal rain. Severe drought. I gave up long ago.

We got the same heat but it sounds like a bit more rain than you kqcrna. Did you have to conserve water? It was a really hot summer this year. I had a hard time keeping up with my watering. I suppose I'm lucky I just have 1/4 an acre to cover and that including the house and driveway as well as garage.

Hi all! New to the winter sowing forum and super excited to try it this year. I first heard about it from a friend who goes to the Middle Tn Plant Swap; apparently it was a teaching topic last year! I'm hoping we go over it again this Sat when we meet again.

Floodthelast - thank you for your all the great tutorials on winter sowing! In your second picture post, what are those flowers' names? One looks like a candy or blackberry lily?

Yup heathersgarden, that is a blackberry lily. I loved it so much I both collected it from that flower and traded for more.
I'm really pleased you liked the tutorial, I was hoping it would be helpful.
Hmm in that post of pics the first one is an annual calendula, the second is blackberry lily, the third is gold goblin gaillarida a new personal favorite and the last one is an annual gaillardia called razzle dazzle.

Do check out the seed trading forum. Everyone is very nice and I currently have a trades going on my calendula mix and gold goblin gaillardia as well as four o clocks. : )
