Witch Hazel Hamamelis Virginiana

I have send out seeds for this tree for a couple of years, and I don't know if anyone who received them has ever had any luck getting them to germinate and grow. Please update me so I can decide whether or not to go get more seeds at camp, they are nearly ready to harvest this month, the trees will start shooting them out of their pods soon, and then the trees will not have any pods left on them. (It's hilarious, if you put the pods in a paper bag you will hear them shooting around in there like popcorn in the microwave.)

I would appreciate hearing about your experience trying to grow this tree from seed.

Hi Mary! I am not one of the folks you sent the seed to,but I am very interested in giving them a try,so if you decide to harvest any,I would be more than happy to trade for some or send postage,whichever you prefer. If you send them ,I will definitely let you know how they do!

OK Angie, I'll probably go to the camp next week and do a bit of seed harvesting. I have a feeling this is a tough one, considering the probably thousands of seeds that get broadcast at camp by Ma Nature, and how few new tree seedlings I see there. It's too bad we're not allowed to dig one up to take home.

alwazeroom4more, The Pawpaw,Asimina triloba doesn't have a separate male and female plant.It's the way the flowers are timed to be fertile that causes them to need another variety to produce fruit.The Sunflower variety is about the only one I've heard to be self fertile. There are other species related to Asimina triloba (Asimina incarna, A. longifolia, A. obovata, A. parviflora, A. pygmaea, A. reticulata, A. tetramera, A. X nashii)that grow more in the Southeastern US.Asimina Triloba requires about 400 chill hours. I have some seedlings,three varieties of A.triloba,but not sure if they are compatible in your zone. I can find quite a bit of the wild stuff, but certainly couldn't afford to send that much. Chicory, plantain, fireweed, Purslane, wood sorrel, Solomon's seal (false?), some type of gooseberry (wild ones, when I go to Idaho) Jerusalem artichoke, red alder, skunk cabbage--maybe, kinnikinnick, MAYBE serviceberry, wild ginger (certainly not 40 of them, though), possibly Oregon grape, bedstraw, burdock, not sure on monkeyflower, cascara, snowberry, all heal, yarrow, yellow violets, Virginia creeper, maybe nuphar polysepalus, wild strawberries (fragaria virginiana and chiloensis).

H. virginiana blooms in fall. I love H. vernalis, which is in full bloom now, but I can't say that I detect any scent from them - I've got Arnold Promise (yellow) and Diane (red). Diane is more of a shrub; I'd hate to see Arnold kept small, since it really does want to be a small tree - at least mine does. Maybe one that starts with several stems would be happy kept shorter. Dawn Viburnum (V x bodnantense) has been blooming sporadically all winter. The flowers have a wonderful fragrance, but, on mine at least, there are never enough open at one time to make an olfactory impact. The small pink flowers are certainly cheerful in February and March though. If it's not invasive in your zone, you can use Lonicera fragrantissima, or winter honeysuckle. It's a rampant grower, but is the most fragrant early blooming plant in my garden. I cut stems starting in January, since I don't have room to let this plant grow to the size it would like to be. Corylopsis, or Winter Hazel, blooms at the very start of real spring. C. glabrescens is supposed to be much more fragrant than the one I have, C. pauciflora. Mine has a light scent; it's not as showy (colorful) as the witch hazels in bloom, but has an interesting, slightly wild growth habit. Mahonia aquifolium has fragrant spring flowers and is hardy to zone 5, but I'm not sure how early it would bloom in that zone. I'm also not sure how early Abeliophyllum distichum, or white forsythia, blooms, but it is said to be very fragrant.

Hi Eileen! Sure looks like it to me--Danny? Others? We have a couple near here, across the road from us. But I'll come by soon, anyway, just to see the new digs! And to get one of them, too! Or two! :) . Oh. I have the BEST book everyone. It's called, "Essential Native Trees and Shrubs for the Eastern United States." But we're not in the eastern native ecoregion. . . well, in NE OK, we could be considered a part of it, roughly speaking. Many of their shrubs and trees are also native here. Nonetheless, I had to actually do a lot of reading and research online before being able to confirm it. But if you're in eastern OK, this book could be very helpful to you, too. (Or if you're Danny in Arkansas! LOL) . What I love about it besides the comphrehensive profiles, is that it has charts showing the size of the shrub/tree in 5, 10, 15, 20 years or so. So helpful in knowing what to grow in our yards. Also, wasn't thinking of native plants I already have here--evening primrose, late boneset, echinacea, gaillardia, rudbeckia. . . probably many others. . . will add as we think of them. Oh, and as a side note. . . native shrubs are in nearly all respects, more beautiful than non-natives.

I'd love to have a few witch hazel seeds to try and get a start. As a newbie to both this forum and, more important, to the place where I now live in SW Ohio, I have nothing to offer in trade, unfortunately, though I'd be happy to send postage.

Hi Mooseflop, I'm sorry to say I didn't find a single seed pod on any of the trees at camp...and there are many trees there in several different locations and I checked them all. I am really baffled by the situation there, trying to figure out what happened this year, and wondering if the bad storm that hit the camp one Sunday in July could possibly have knocked all the seeds off. It was very strange, the water carried off a lot of plants too, and the seeds would have been washed away with them. I was surprised to find empty patches of soil where there had previously been Jewelweed, grasses, Dames Rocket, wild Violets, and Dogtooth Violets.

I don't necessarily trade for witch hazel seeds, so that would not have been an issue. I will however add your GW ID to a list I have made in the hope that next year I will be able to harvest seeds and share.
