b. heracleifolia, luxurians from seed

Has anyone successfully grown Begonia luxurians or heracleifolia from seed? How long did they take to germinate? I have grown other species from seed but I'm on my second try with these two and need to know how long to wait before I give up. I got the seed from the ABS seed fund, so I'm pretty sure it's good seed.

I haven't done it but if they don't come up in a couple of months, I'd say they were old. You might want to get in touch with some of the hybridizers (Kartuz and Palm Hammock would be two excellent resources) and see if they have any comments on these two species.

I've grown varieties from T&M in the past with poor germination rates - same goes for gloxinia. Then I harvested my own gloxinia seed, sowed them, and they came up thick. Fresh seed is the way to go.

thanks, hcmcdole. I just sowed fresh seed from b. soli-mutata. I'll test your theory and see how that does. By the way, is Palm Hammock a catalog I can find by google search? I have ordered from Mike Kartuz's catalog before, but Palm Hammock is new to me. Kimbatwl61

I think IVillage bought GW from Spike, but don't know if IVillage resold... Yep, the good, old days!! Like everything else, memories. The Begonia is stuffed with shredded, fine paper for shipping. Have you added new plants? Thanks Marg. Larry, I don't even know what the feature, 'clipping,' is..lol. Only clippings I'm familar with are cuttings. Mike, thank you..You won't believe it, but so far plants are fitting. lol..it's the trees, Gardenia, D. Marginata, and Cinnamon that's going to be a problem. Think my Cinnamon will go in the gh..strange, but it grows faster in cold temps than warm..I don't understand.

HOWDY....I GOT IT!!! Patience IS the key! I wrote one nursery, asking if they had B. luxurians. Someone from the nursery wrote back, saying they'd have more in a wk or two. Well, a wk or two came and went..no Begonia luxurians.. Weeks passed, and still no luxurrians. I gave up. Today, I got online, and thought to check one more time. Lo and Behold! More in stock. I purchased two. lol. BTW, I never got around sowing the seeds. I've been so busy with house plants, outside gardening, and household cleaning, I got side-tracked.. Before sowing, I wanted to be free of worries. Relaxed. Woe, if you're still around...how are your seedlings doing and what percentage germinated? H, your Rexes are gorgeous. Wow. Bottom heat is helpful, especially this time of year.You could check and see what the temp is under the lights, for a guide. You can use the ballasts for heating. I think light is necessary but not strong light or algae might start.Isn't it interesting the different opinions we all have. Well, like Elda Haring used to say, horticulture is not an exact science . . . . Toni, my luxurians plant is about 4" tall, still has your name on it for spring, so don't worry too much. HEMC, did you see that gorgeous picture of B. 'Carousel' on the other site? To think it has been around for 39 years and I just 'discovered' it, others must want it as well, I see Kartuz has it but in limited supply. I am going to order next year, it is absolutely fabulous (which is also the name of my favorite comedy show, come to think of it). I love Christianity, it makes us try and be better.

About B. amphioxus, I meant to comment that it either seems to grow like rabbits, or is hard. I recently sent some cuttings to a friend who is struggling with it, I looked up Mrs. Thompson's article which she wrote shortly before she died. The people she contacted found it difficult and she also commented that it is from an area that can be as much as 76 degrees at night and 90 degrees in the daytime, and she thought one should probably not let it get warmer than 77 degrees daytime, letting the nighttime temp drop to 65 degrees. I don't grow it that warm, I have 3 plants in tall flea-- -market clear vases, letting it get tall as I don't want to miss a chance at seeds. Mrs. Thompson was also told it will root from a leaf tip. Another friend reported a rooted cutting has produced four plants for him.

Not sure if they have a catalog, but you can order on-line but it's probably safer to call. Best thing is to visit them in person - bigger plants for a little extra $$.
