I ordered tree and shrub seeds!

I found a nursery with some interesting seeds. I ordered American Cranberry Viburnum, Pink Dogwood a Dwarf Flowering Almond and Speckled Swan gourds! The whole order came to about 14 bucks! The place is called Moonshine Designs Nursery and it's in Milan Il. Now I am going to anxiously await the order! I wanted some interesting stuff to Winter Sow this year. I wanted the tree seeds especially. It will be my first time attempting to grow a tree!!

Thanks Bakemom. I got inspired to try shrubs and trees this year. I was successful in growing a Beautyberry from seeds that a friend gave me. I also tried Burning Bush but that didn't sprout. I'll let you know when the seeds come because I also never ordered from these folks before!

I can help you out. I have silver maple seeds that need planted fresh and they are starting to fall. I have cedar berries, a few bur oak acorns, some spreading yew, wild pink roses, autumn splendor mountain ash, crimson cloud hawthorn, purple concord grapes and I think some others, can't remember, I think I have my page updated if I did it right (I'm new). Hi Mari11, Ok , well my first question is this: What phyto requirements are there for sending some, any , all kinds of seeds to Russia? What is the cost and are you paying for that or are you just mailing the seeds out without checking into the phyto requirements ? If you are interested in requirements follow this link : http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/plaveg/expe.shtml What is a Phytosanitary Certificate? A Phytosanitary Certificate is a document often required by many states and foreign countries for the import of non processed, plant products. The word Phytosanitary is derived from two Greek wordsÂPhyto meaning plant and sanitary, meaning clean. Export commodities (depending on the country or state) must meet certain standards or criteria outlined by the importing country or state. These plant health requirements pertain to storage pests, plant diseases, chemical treatments and weeds. I for one dont want to be party to the possible sending of disease , foreign insects in the egg stage or any other possible infection to a different country that could be harboured on seeds collected from gardens or forests here etc. Most countries these days restrict certain seeds/plants for specific infector factors and do so for good reason .Even if a phyto is not required for certain plant seeds..it certainly is a cause for concern. The possibility that sending seeds from say for example some kind of conifer that could be harbouring a pest that could wipe out stands of similar trees in Russia is not something I would want to be responsible for. Just look at what we are facing here in Canada with Dutch Elm disease, Emerald Ash borer etc. Something to think about !!!!!!!! Signet

Good luck with your shrubs! I had great germination from Sheffields seeds and they have a huge selection. I plan to try a few more varieties this winter and will be sure to check out Moonshine Design. Thanks!

Netwiz Thanks for the heads up on Sheffield! Wow they do have a lot of stuff and I love their web page the way you can search on categories!!! I think they have more selections than Moonshine!

Wow...maybe I'll hit that nursery too!! Not that I have anyplace for trees but could use some bushes :D

Might have been a blessing you couldn't get Burning Bush to germinate....it's been declared as an invasive species in PA and most of the eastern US

Over on our side it is well behaved....just too dry I suppose.

Thanks Vera! I didn't know Burning Bush was considered invasive. Now I'm glad it didn't sprout! We have a new Township park and they planted them in it!! I guess the park planners didn't know either unless they planted some type that isn't invasive.

No sooner did I reply and I was ordering LOL! Just got a few things....I wanted soooooooo much more, but ya know LOL!

I believe that! Some landscapers and even local nurseries don't keep up with the latest additions to the no-no lists. We still have nurseries, ect selling Butterfly Bush (B. davidii)

All the nurseries out here still sell Butterfly Bush. I don't think it is invasive out here. I've never seen a seedling yet from the one I have. I didn't get my seed order yet from Moonshine so I hope it doesn't take much longer. I wrote them an e-mail asking what is going on.
