Started ripping out!!

As I mentioned in agreement with another Winter Sower a couple of weeks ago I ripped out my stand of Himalyan Balsam last week. Many of you may know it, 6 feet tall, re-seeding, beautiful colours of pink flowers, but I've had it too long. I need some ideas to replace it. The area is semi-shaded (next to daylilies) and moist in the spring, but can get quite dry in the summer. I would like something that is tall (at least 5 feet) and flowers (no foliage plants). Ideas requested. Thank you.

Is this the year for ripping out overgrown plants or what? :-)
Quite a few WSowers have posted something to this effect.
You are doing what I have wanted to do with my garden this season.

I am doing the same thing here...too...sorta.
I have been digging out the many Phlox seedlings and plants that have overtaken the garden.
I am also potting up things then ripping out others after having my fill of potting. I'll see how long I can stand potting up things.
I am planning to hold a plant sale like tiffy next spring. :-D

DH mowed the lawn today and did not 'bag' ity so he has to rake it tomorrow. I took the opportunity to rip out a stand - actually three - of Foxgloves. Then I moved to some Lupines. I am rethinking some perennial geraniums. Ripped out some Anchusas. It's ongoing... never enough time. I always say I'm going to rethink the gardens, but most times can't really get rid of anything.

Piti - Good plan to pot some things early if you can. :O)

Northerner, My suggestion would be Phlox Paniculata. There's pinks, whites, purples. My best ones grow in the conditions you describe. Mulching is good.

I also have coneflower growing in part shade, Heliopsis, Buddleias, Milkweed does great there too, Goldenrod, Bee Balm (Monarda), Cimicifuga (Bugbane), Monkshood...

Nope, not I. I don't go through phases like that, because I am already enjoying a riot of colors like those from spring through fall. :-) I have red, yellow, blue, orange, fuschia and everything in between from late January-early February on. Some gardeners might say gaudy, but nobody who passes by has said to me that my garden is ugly yet. It's been years since I had mums in my garden. I plant thickly and let them duke it out for space. Those that could not survive, I don't replace. And since mums could not fight its way, I went for asters instead. I still have Rudbeckia hirta, R. triloba, R. Glodsturm, Geranium 'Rozanne', Phlox paniculata, Hydrangea 'Annabelle, Hydrangea quercifolia, Hydrangea paniculata, Morning Glory 'President Tylor', Clematis 'Bette Corning', Echinacea purpurea, Lychnis calcedonica, Clematis 'Huldine', Lilium speciosum, Pelargonium, Feverfew, Roses and Hosta plantaginea in bloom. Ornamental grass is beginning to bloom and Sedum 'Autumn Joy''s color is deepening. Most of the hosta big and small are still looking grand. I still have asters, sweet autumn clematis, fall corcus and Colchicum to look forward to. They will contrast nicely with autumn leaves.

"I can't force myself to work inside during the summer, no matter how much I try" LOL, now that our little remodel is almost done, it's going to be hard to keep on track now that the gardening season is about to start here. Have the tile for our little TV room, just have to call the installer. Everything else that doesn't get done will have to wait till fall. Go to the last bound off stitch you made. Pull out the end of the yarn if you have already woven it into the shawl and pull that end through the loop of the last stitch. Now you should be able to just gently pull on the end and all of it will unknit row by row. (Sometimes you need to pull the yarn through the second to last stitch too.) If the yarn was a fuzzy or eyelash type yarn, you will find that the fuzz or the lashes will tangle every now and then, so you just tug a little harder there or untwist the fuzz, and continue to unravel it.

Bobbin Tension frustration!

Surprisingly, it may be your top thread or needle causing the bobbin tension to be bad. Clean everything really, really well. Use a penlight and look for a stray piece of dust or thread. Take off the needle plate. (Mine is difficult to seat completely & it required a trip in for service and the fix was reseating the needle plate). Put in a new needle, rethread with different thread - put in a new bobbin, and test on fabric using a wide zig zag. This will help you see if it is the top or bobbin out of balance. You may have accidentally changed your top tension when moving the quilt around. I hope this helps-let us know. It has to be something simple that will make you laugh.

Helianthus augustifola. Nice, dark green foliage. Blooms in the fall with tiny sunflower like flowers. Mine is about 6' tall this year.

Joe Pye Weed will also grow in shade, but it will probably need to be staked.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. Tiffy, I have been trying to get phlox to flower for several years but perhaps it is getting too much sun. I divided the plant and moved it around last year but there's not even one bud in sight so I think I'll try some in this spot. Another thing I've been wanting to try is Monkshood so I think I'll give that a shot.
Token, I think I'm too far north for the Helianthus and I had no success with Joe Pye Weed germinating - maybe time for another try.
My Heliopsis are using up some of my very precious full sun spots. I may try moving them to a semi-shaded spot under my apple tree. I am also tired of the Hydrangea Annabelle that have been there many years, so more ripping to be done. Thanks a lot.
