help - new beds are wet and solid clay

1) Today I decided to adapt to a serious water problem & quit fighting. Holes actually fill completely up! I've learned day lillies (repel rabbits too!), elephant ears, star hibiscus (had one and loved it!), and some ferns (?). What else? Late sun for most of the day. What about flowering vines? Also, just planted an 8 foot oak 5 ft from the WET. Move? I am sooo excited to see what Y'all say - I just found the site. THANKS!

2) New house and crap, unworked, hard CLAY. I've worked good soil in, pitched lots and added tons of mulch. I see frogs, lizards and a few worms, but wonder if I can add or do something to help break it down better/quicker, especially where the next beds will go...
