Summer Sowing Update & Questions!

I summer sowed 9 big containers of Sweet William on 8/10 and as of today (8/17) ALL 9 containers have germinated! Yay!

I also sowed 9 containers of pansy seeds. 2 have germinated so far. Double yay!

Now, onto the questions. I'm wondering if I could successfully sow the following at this time of year:

1. Achillea millefolium (Common name: Yarrow).

2. Nepeta nervosa (Common name: Catmint).

3. Delphinium Pacific Hybrid Mixed Colors.

4. Mrmeria maritima (Bee's Hybrid Thrift).

5. Papavar orientalis (Oriental Poppy). This one confuses me 'case the seed packet says later sowings should be overwintered in a coldframe.

6. Trachelium caeruleum (Blue Throatwort)

Oh! I forgot one!

What about Larkspur Earl Grey? Can I summer sow that for next year blooms???

Hi Ponce,
I have tried Delphinium, Larkspur & foxgloves and never
even germinated one seed. I am about to give up on all of
these plants. I started 2 pkg of Larkspur this May, none,
not one little seed sprouted.
Only luck with larkspur I have had is when a mama plant drops
the seed.

I am looking forward to reading what others do for these
seeds germination success.

i just sowed lathyrus matucana " " chocolate streamer sweet pea " " vernus rainbow mix heliotrope marine carnation cascading clove drops snapdragon cascadia my last ones died- but i did them inside adlumia fungosa climing bleeding heart has to be in the fridge thunbergia fragrans sweet clock vine ummmm can ya tell that i like fragrance?? the only one's that arent fragrant i got as bonus's!! LOL i did see that on another site i really do want the trailing carnations!! they have some kinda black thingi in them!! WOA BABE!!!! so later if someone wants to trade something for them!! i so want to!! LOL i right now have sweet william!! they are so great smelling and garlic chives and very fresh!! Summer Sowing Veggie Question

I haven't tried it yet, but am going to this year. Due to the whacko weather we had this spring, most of my cool crops were a bust. So I have already invested in seed for cabbage, broccoli, and lettuce and will try again for the fall. I'm not going to start them inside though- I'm gonna milkjug them on the deck, and keep them shaded when it gets super hot. Wish me luck-- I'll wish you luck, too!

Another hollyhock question...sowing this summer?

Hi Wytch and all, I typically follow mother nature's regime where seeds fall from our mature hollyhocks in mid to late summer and sprout to become little plants before winter, to survive and bloom the following winter (whether perennial types or biennial types)....soooo, I'd say in zone 7 you're fine to plant them right now to get small plants to overwinter this winter. I bet most will bloom next year (if the perennial type) or all will (if the biennial type). I just planted a few (okay a ton) seeds two weeks ago and they're up and making great progress. They've got enough time to become reasonable small plants by winter to bloom next year. For summer-sowing, I just start them in pots outside (though in the ground would work as well). Oh, and I move mine all the time except when they're getting ready to flower, I think the best time is in spring after they're showing signs of waking up again, but not growing full-bore yet. Just keep them well watered when you move them. Let us know what you do, and how it works out. Like most things, if you ask four gardeners you'll get five answers, so I'm sure others will chime in with methods just as good, or better, than mine. :) Take care, Grant Here is a link that might be useful: 'Old Barnyard' hollyhocks from Wayside

Vera's advise last year was to direct sow, not sow in a jug. She said to it around fall so seeds have time to sprout and form small seedlings before winter. They're supposed to winter over, grow tall, and bloom in early summer.

By the time she told me that it was too late, but some volunteers were coming up. I threw more seeds out there in winter. Sure enough, they grew in cold weather, (fall and spring) and grew to be tall and beautiful this summer. Don't transplant and they do better.

Wow so many flowers blooming all at once, is it obvious that I have a shade garden?

I just got germination on the thyme, and dianthus I summer sowed. I also sowed lavender, sweet william, coneflower, trumpet vine and spearmint oh and scabiosa. We'll see, it was hit or miss and I saved seeds for WS too. Most of those got in the pots just last week, the germinators I found today were planted a while ago. Still it is nice to see things growing.

Delphinium seeds like it dark and cool...I never had decent germination from them until I put them in complete all day shade/darkness.
The rest on your list, I have not summer sowed before, just WSed. But the Trachelium caeruleum I have tried sowing indoors outdoors, WSed and have had no success. So maybe they'd like being Summer Sowed? Definitely worth a try.
