Confessions of a winter sower

I'll admit it. I'm a seedling murderer. Could we call it neglegent herbicide? Almost everybody is still in their original flats. The death toll includes 3/4 of the Zinnias, 1/4 of the phlox, 4 of the salvia, and 97% of the bellflower pyrimadilis. I'm afraid to count who else has vanished.

It is so bad, that yesterday, one of my little orange flowers dropped seeds as I brushed against her. I felt so guilty, I couldn't even bear to look to see who she was.

I'm not sure which defense I will use:

1) My summer projects were bigger than I expected.

2) The slugs did it!

3) But, the columbines are still germinating.

4) They will starve/drown if I put them in the big bed without adding more organic matter.

I'm wondering if a year in an unprepared holding bed or plunk and run in the big unprepared bed is the best course of action.
