Dragon Wing Begonia
Comments (35)Hello Begonia people, I just planted Dragon Wing Begonias in porch urns. I bought them good sized, and they came with a tag saying fertilize twice monthly with 20-20-20. If I can't get 20-20-20, is a digit or two one way or the other on each item -- like 18-19-21 for example -- good enough? Or would it be better to use 5-5-5, keeping the propotions correct, if not the volume? I haven't had luck with Begonias in the ground in past years. I'm hoping that because I can move the urn to a sunnier spot if necessary, and control the soil mix more closely, I'll get better plants....See MoreAngel Wing Pink Peach Blossom or Dragon Wing
Comments (6)Bougie, There are plenty of places to get most of the ones you list above. Some you might find locally - check from spring until fall at local nurseries (especially the ones that carry begonias) and the big box stores - you never know if and when a shipment might come in with a few begonias. I've picked begonias up at Walmart, Home Depot, and Lowe's. My local Ace Hardware was one of the best places I ever picked up begonias but they went out of business twice now (different owners). I cited several mail order places in another thread on this forum. My recent purchases were from Accents for Home and Garden, Taylor Greenhouses, and Logees. Prices vary but if only one vendor carries the plant you want then you can either pass it by or pay up. Most plants will be on the small side when buying mail order so treat your new plants like babies when you get them until they get some size on them. Come to a convention if you can manage. It is an expensive way to get plants when you add in transportation, lodging, meals, registration but it can be fun and you will have a ton of begonias to choose from at very reasonable prices (cheap prices really). This year's convention is at the end of this month and is in West Palm Beach, FL. It sounds like there will be over 100 different varieties to choose from plus one trip is to Palm Hammock Orchid Estates which is a regular smorgasbord for begonias....See MoreI have a dragon wing begonia and It won't grow
Comments (1)To coin a phrase--Patience, Grasshopper! It's probably just waiting for warmer weather. On the other hand--I just switched brands of potting mix since some of my plants weren't doing as well as I thought they should be, and they are really exploding. Of course, the weather is already what normal people in a reasonable climate would call HOT! We're just grateful it's only in the middle/upper eighties!...See MoreDragon Wing Begonia... Comments (2)I overwinter mine in the basement every year, under grow lights. These are fibrous rooted begonias, so not really conducive to storing dormant. I always cut mine back to about 8 inches and let them regrow. IMO, unless you have extraordinarily bright indoor light, they are going to suffer a lot of transition stress and just drop the blooms and much of the foliage anyway, so it's easier and yields a better plant in the end to just go ahead and cut them back. It definitely wants as much light as possible, so a large south doorwall would be great. You can add a florescent spotlight if necessary to augment the natural light, and it should bloom all winter for you. They're actually very easy to overwinter, and grow back well year after year. You can also take cuttings from them the winter to start new ones for next year....See Morenhsuzanne
