The LA Arboretum in Arcadia-near Pasadena is gorgeous. Lots of tropicals plants and palms-it's where they filmed Jurrasic Park. Also, the Getty Museum grounds in Malibu are also very nice. The Huntington gardens also have quite a nice collection-nice place to take a picnic. All of these are anywhere from 30-45 minutes, maybe an hour if traffic is bad from downtown. Another idea is to rent a bike and ride thru some of the beautiful neighborhoods in Palos Verdes or Hancock Park. Hancock Park in particular is one of the oldest upscale residential areas in LA and has lots of established gardens to see.

Starting my THIRD year at the community garden here in Encino, CA. Running out of room! Rented a second plot to fit in all the tomatos I purchased at Tomatomania. My two young boys like and sometimes love coming to the garden. I frequently have "Garden Dates" there with their friends. They like giving their friends tours and running around in the grassy areas. I think my youngest son has really caught the gardening bug this year - he has planted a few seedlings and likes to give them names. So far we have "Jacob's Jackedy Sunflower" and "Jacob's HotPeno" I'm trying to figure out a way to post some pics... Anyone else out there gardening with kids at a community garden? Yes. They just opened the Chinese Garden, which is very nice. I recommend that you enter the J Garden, walk through it (to the left) and when your done follow the path to the Chinese garden. Most of the streams in the J Garden flow from a huge waterfall in the Chinese Garden. I have been a few times and I always guide people through that way. Its also interesting to go from a more subtle J Garden into the more ornate Chinese garden and the walk sort of prepares you. Enjoy ! Let me know how you liked it. The Huntington also has lilly ponds in sort of a Jungle setting in another part of the gardens. The place is much larger than you think so I would go see the gardens you really want to see first and then if your not beat up go see the rest.

Whats the Red Minis at Rose Hill Rose Garden?

There were way over one hundred of them in bloom. I bet there were more like two-three hundred of them lining the walkswys. I loved the dark red! The shade of the icebergs seem to have no effect on the blooms. Would love to plant some in a partial shaded area near my front steps. THanks Roseboy, where is there a zone 15?

I 2nd the LA Arboretum. I've never been there myself, but have heard rave reviews of it. Fantasy Island of the 70s was filmed there, too.

The Arboretum near Pasadena is truly a beautiful place and some of the old Tarzan movies were also filmed there. I highly recommend a visit there.

The Gardens at The Getty are totally awesome. And admission to The Getty is FREE! There's lots else to see there but the gardens were my favorite.

Have fun. And thanks to others for their ideas. I like the one about renting a bike and touring nice neighborhoods.
