Unfortunately not only Kordes but Tantau and Meilland also use the same name for different roses, so I doubt that they will give up. I do not know the reason, I can just speculate. Maybe they trademark the name, so nobody else can come up with a new "Valencia", Iceberg, or Princess de Monaco - only Kordes or in the later case Meilland. It is frustrating and sometimes it is difficult to sort out which rose named the same way has or has not any difference from a previous one. On the other hand, it is strange that Kordes named his new climber Aloha a name already used for another climber with entirely different color. I didn't have any 'breaking dormancy or other problem with roses from Palatine. None were Âpuny but were huge; the largest bare roots I have ever received. I will be forced to order from Hortico if Pickering will not incorporate in their coming new, one hundred roses next year  I am craving for a few of newer Tantau roses. I am sorry to say that today I noticed more spots on Caramella. Probably not blackspot, it looks like anthracnose judging from the grayish tan 'hole' in the middle of the spots. Or maybe both - in this coastal inferno all bets are off. This Caramella is positively a flori or a shrub, not a HT  it throws out sprays 3-5 buds on the yip of the canes, blooms in cluster. Caramel Antike, on the other hand, is a HT. I am told that it is the newest craze in the florist market in Europe. Please describe the difference, if you can, between the old Caramella and the new one.

It does sound perfect, Donn! Dereks, your forecast is pretty much the same as mine, since I am not too far from the Western Slope. Tons of grasshoppers here too. My 3 year old has been outside catching them all day. Where are all of the praying mantis this year? They usually keep the grasshoppers in check. The good news today is that DH did all the edging and cut the grass, so I could just putter around the garden. Potted up some mail order plants that didn't get in the ground before the heat arrived. Sowed some more bush beans, and herbs to extend the harvest time. Watered all of the containers on the porch, and cleaned up the pot ghetto from winter sowing, dumping anything that didn't have at least one sprout in it. The pumpkins, cucumbers, and beans seem to love this heat, even the swiss chard is holding up, but surprisingly the pepper plants look horrible. Not sure if I am watering them too much, or not enough. Anyway, I think a bad day in the garden, beats a good day doing anything else!

Thanks for the nice comments. I hope your Peace rose gives you pleasure, Gary. I have some leafless roses (some David Austin varieties) that don't care for the south. I think the China and Tea roses (not hybrid teas) don't mind the heat and humidity as much. Silvia, you're right. This is pretty much a carefree rose for me. I fertilize a few times a year (we're snowbirds, so I'm not here year round to care for it). It probably could use a pruning but it would have too much competition and shade if it were short. DG, I received this rose as a rooting cutting from another gardener on the forum. I picked it up from her on one of our trips south. I guess it is a pass along plant. I'm grateful to have it and that I haven't killed it. SJN, I haven't tried rooting one myself. Maybe someday! Marcia

The jasmines I had growing in SoCal usually outgrew the supports that they came with in their containers pretty fast, so if I hadn't given them something to climb up they found their own means. Lol...the star jasmines were most likely to mound and start to resemble flowery shrubs that don't mind climbing a bit if they grow out far enough to find something to climb. The night blooming and the pink jasmines climbed nearby trees that the neighbor had growing on their patio in large pots, they also started climbing up, over, and twining around the 'decorative metal fencing' I'd put around my patio to keep the dog from running out to jump in the lake to chase the ducks the second I'd opened the patio door. So it all depends on the vine and what's available around them - the thing that really surprised me was when they were going up and twining around the neighbor's potted trees. Luckily for her trees that I was able to un-twine and provide something else for them to climb up so they'd quit trying to suffocate her poor trees.
