Plastic containers for Winter sowing

I'm going to winter sow this year. I've seen some setups for sowing in large plastic bottles where the bottles were cut in half, holes punched in for drainage and for the rain to get in. The bottles act as mini terrariums keeping the soil moist. When the seedlings are large enough in spring they are transplanted. I think this is a great idea but has anyone tried cutting the narrow neck of the bottles off, planting the seed directly in the ground, then gently "screwing" the upsidedown bottle (with holes punched in for rain), right over the seed?

I would like to try this because I will not always be around to water my seeds in plastic bottles and it would eliminate transplanting and shocking my plants.

Also, when can you should you plant the seeds out that you want to winter sow?

If anyone has any good pics or sites that show how others prepare their jugs for sowing seeds, I'd appreciate the links.

Thanks a bunch!
