Herbs propagated from grocery store cuttings
Comments (14)Hi Lali and all you gardeners :-), Very impressed w/your green thumbs in getting grocery "volunteers" to reproduce in your gardens. I'm pretty much a "brown thumb-er" in that I basically can get thing to grow, but keeping them alive~ now that's a problem. For example: I just can't seem to get lemon grass to thrive. I've had a pot in full sun and they just limped along till it faded away. I have another pot, this time under a light shade cloth and it's not doing much better. What's the secret here?...See MoreCitrus from seed from grocery store produce
Comments (2)Key Lime will come true-to-type from seed and may flower in as little as 2-3 years, with good care. Calamondin, perhaps not available at the grocery but maybe from a friend, can also bear from seed in a couple years. Lemons would take longer, and would likely be too big to grow inside the house before they bore their first flowers and fruit, but you could do that by growing a lemon seedling, then as the plant is approaching the ceiling, take a cutting or air layer from the top and using it to replace your original plant. That way the plant "thinks" it's getting taller, whereas you're actually keeping it shorter than the ceiling height. Oranges and grapefruit could be done the same way, but will take even more years (at least 8 for grapefruit; at least 10 for oranges, and that's under ideal conditions), and you'd likely have to go through at least 2-3 cutting/air layer cycles. Your Clementine seeds may flower in 3-4 years, but again, you may have to propagate from the top and so not end up with the original plant. Almost any other citrus that makes pollen (Tahiti/Bearss lime and navel oranges do not) could be used as a pollen source for it....See MoreFrom the Grocery Store
Comments (6)Taro root for elephant ears type plants (I've heard it is better to get them in smaller stores as the large grocery stores have roots that have been treated to prevent sprouting). Jerusalem artichokes for sunflowers. I have been tempted to sprout some pecans in the shell. I know that raw peanuts sprout because the squirrels planted a bunch for me. Now I only feed them the roasted variety! And by accident I have discovered that any piece of potato thrown out turns into a potato plant! As a kid in Virginia, we liked to sprout the avocado seed and a couple times we rooted the top of a pineapple. Neither type of plant lived to maturity, though. And what kid didn't sprout beans for class projects? They always had such a great germination rate....See MoreEver plant grocery store taro/malanga?
Comments (5)I have planted taro, and so far it isn't running everywhere in the regular garden. It hasn't come up this year though. In my water garden, it is sending out runners. I haven't found any malanga, but would like to. Where did you find it?...See Morejroot
