Here is a photo of the parakeet chick taken last night. Sort of fuzzy as it was hard to hold chick and snap photo, but you get the idea.

I had raised cockatiels and parakeets when I was in my 20s (last year! HA!)....and so this is a deja vu! There is a second chick that is several days younger, and it is also being handled. This one is promised to my best friend and I am working to get it really tame!

Also, best pal had huge cactus (10'+) but not a Seguaro, that had a single flower, which was pollentated and ripened to look like an apple. The fruit split open last weekend and she gave it to me. I planted 144 seeds (72 wells at 2 seeds/well) and in 5 days 4 had sprouted.

This morning I counted 14 and just a few hours later had nearly 20! So....free to good home (later when they are bigger!).

Anyway, still hot and dry here in Spring, TX! Hippis are recovering form GIANT COON attack.

Kristi, how exciting watching the babies grow! I'm amazed how fast the cactus grows - looks like nice size sprouts too. I've never planted cactus seeds, but I just bought and planted sedum seeds and they are spindly little fragile suckers. I doubt I'll get any real plants out of them. Glad to hear your hippies are recovering. Alana

What a cute little bird!! So do you just handle him/her a lot to make the bird tame? Or do you treat them like a lion or something...whips and cages and prods? LOL

You gatta teach a young bird who's boss.

Cactusmcharris, The xeric garden is more or less undulating.........some high and low spots, by design. I have the cacti, succulents and others that don't like wet feet on the higher areas. As it is in your climate, the enemy here is winter wet, not so much cold temperatures. It's very open so it's airy, gets full sun all year, and I think the crushed stone mulch helps to hold a little warmth in winter, and keeps things dry and clean. This garden is fairly new, so the plants are still spreading, but I see the Sempervivums creating nice colonies now.

Thanks guys! Now that I have a name I was able to find a pic that looks just like my plant and it does look to be a Haworthia Attenuata. I'm not able to get it closer to a window but it does lean towards the windows behind me which are pretty large so I'm guessing it's "seeking" out the sunlight on its own lol. And I will make sure not to over water it. I put it in fresh soil and I'm going to let it sit like that for a while because the soil seems to have a bit of moisture to it already. Thanks again!

Barb...both happy and sad....Happy he is moving forward with his life. Knowing he will go far as long as he stays focused on his studies, and learns to quit being so wasteful. Sad because he is moving on and we will be seeing very little of him in the next 4 years or so. We havent made any new life adventures yet. House needs some TLC. I suppose first we will get used to having a home with just us and the critters and go from there. Chell I used to be a dog and cat groomer. I loved it too. But my employer was a deedeedee. Never had the money to pay me each week and always "owed" me. And she never gave me my tips either.Then at the end of the year she reported more earnings for me than what I had really made.Fortunitly I kept records and proved my case and won, so make sure you don't let the same happen to you. I have kept my clippers, blades and accessories and still will do a neighbors dog or two once in awhile to keep my skills up.....but don't miss the hair stuck in places I did'nt know existed....lol. Love all the pictures the everyone post. Always enjoy seeing ya'lls babies. Regina

Did you mention where you live? (Good idea is to put general location and/or growing zone next to your name...) Yes, Sempervivums could be grown indoors but usually they don't look their best. I am not sure if they are better off with having to spend winter outside (some plants have to have x number of cold days to grow well); unless you get them really good light during winter they usually look quite sad. During summer it may not make that much difference. But amount of light is always less indoors than outdoors. But if you don't have access to garden or deck-balcony, you have to just do it indoors. Many ppl have to, living in apartments without balcony or any other outdoor space. All of the succulents need lots of light otherwise they stretch as I already mentioned about Painted lady. I use lots of supplemental lighting in winter, and probably will improve even more next winter. here is same Echeveria purpusorum, still indoors (March) and blooming, under lights: Adding more perlite definitely helps.

Oh and Kristi... can I get on your cactus list? :o) I've developed another plant obsession... despite the dermal damage I may incur with collecting cacti.

I think it's a cereus peruvus??? there is a photo online that looks similar to the cactus (smaller) and the fruit looks identical. Look at the first cactus mentioned. I'll take a photo next time I'm at Mary's, but there were 6 "ribs" around the columnar shaped plant, and the cacti is easily 10 feet tall if not 12!

Ah, yes. I have several varieties of cereus cacti. They grow SOOOO easy from cuttings. They will branch after they've been topped. I've never had one set fruit before. The blooms are HUGE, mostly opening at night, and fading quickly the next morning if the heat is too intense. I've got some new flower buds setting on mine, I'll try to get pics. Maybe I should go out and attempt to pollinate them ;-)

Make sure to put your bee costume on and hum...otherwise the flowers won't believe you.

I just got home and had written down Lemaireocereus chichipe for the ID on that cactus. I'll send you a bunch as soon as they get bigger (anyone who wants one as long as I have enough)....Ryan(s), you are #1 and #2 on the list.

Ok, did a web search for that and came up with "Polaskia Chichipe", which apparently is closely related to the Cereus family....

hehe, I don't have 15 foot ceilings unfortunately ;-)

but my cats will enjoy it, they'll use it as a comb... hehe I've got a stray outside who uses my rose bushes that way.
