when to dig in-ground amaryllis

This spring, when the weather was warm and stable, I planted my various amaryllis directly in the ground, not in their pots. So I can't withhold water (and believe me, nature is not withholding it here right now!) as usual to induce dormancy. I'll dig them soon, to give them their 2-3 months' rest, but should I dig them with soil for now, or can I just clean them off and put them in the basement with no soil around them for their rest?

Thanks!
