I would find one that is smooth. The rhizomes may be able to get a better hold in one of those creases.

I have a similar one from tsc that is smooth (not a name brand)

they offer them in several sizes and they are quite thick and tuff - they sell them to fill with water for cattle - cattle are not very careful with them.

I live in a place where large timbers (moso, henon, madake, etc,) will get VERY large. There is an abandoned stand of edulis about a mile from here that is almost as big as Silverbrook...

Bamboo is reviled here (aurea is rampant everywhere) because of the growth rates. I eventually will have to sell this home... Resale value is an issue. My sister in law is a real estate agent and has warned me that even a well maintained (or barrier contained) grove will scare off most home buyers.

I plan on surrounding large containers with boulders and other plantings.

This does bring up the issue of boo in suburbia and home resale value, I will start a thread on that at some point.

Agree with you on that, they will only reach a certain stature in the containers. But they may provide interim status until an appropriate planting site is available.

I still think the Rubbermaid containers are the best, they are "shallower" than the big planters and will allow the rhizomes to stretch out a bit more: per given container volume and per corresponding price. All the runners I have seem to have rhizomes/roots within a foot of the surface (containers and in ground plants).

They are also sturdy enough to handle a sharp spade thrust when divisions are done.

Yeah, the bamboo probably needs more space. I was considering building a long planter along the edge of my deck to give them more growing space. Could even insulate it. Anybody done this?

PS There might be a larger pot at that site as well, and Rubbermaid also makes bigger stock tanks (although they might get deeper than we need).

In order to get good size and containment I suggest building a raised bed out of cinder blocks, broken concrete, or similar materials. 24" tall.

Another option are those really big galvanized farm stock tanks.
