Giant Timber in a container?

I bought Giant Timber in 15 gallon and I can tell the container is getting to small. I want to put them in a larger container so that I can keep them on a patio to block out a spot and there isn't a place to place it in the ground. Home Depot had some large plastic pots that I think would work. Any ideas for making or getting something to keep it in?

I have two Giant Timbers(B. oldhamii) in 14-inch pots and they are both over 22 feet tall.

I personally like the 25 gallon tubs that molasses come in from feed stores, they are much tougher than any plant pot that I have come across.

I assume you bought it from a reputable source and not Home Depot or Lowes, where they have bamboo that they call Giant Timber, but is something else, usually labeled Dendrocalamus strictus, which NOT Giant Timber.

If you buy a large pot, the bigger the better, although it makes it tougher to move if so desired.

It is Giant Timber, Oldhamii. I have some from a reputable source and the name on the tags and the look is the same. Wow, 22 feet in 14" pots that great. I love this bamboo.

I raise bamboo, there have been people come here and get for everything from birdhouses to furniture. Most use it for raising pole beans, just take five or six, tie it at ten feet, then raise it up and spread it apart at the bottom until you have the diamiter you want. Plant the beans at the base of each one and wala instant pole beans for the garden and they will climb right up the pole. Bamboo will last indefinitely if put up in the winter so water cannot get into them to freeze.

No snow problems here, that's for sure, but I'm not sure why it doesn't do well. I planted both P. bambusoides aka GIANT JAPANESE TIMBER and P. bambusoides 'Castillon' here and both have struggled. They both started good the first couple of years, then they slowly regressed and I have a hard time just keeping them going by Summer's end. My guess would be that they don't like the high heat, which especially during the years they really did bad, was extremely high for this area, 100+F. I think in cooler Summer regions they both would do better. Moso does great but is very slow to reach large size. Henon, Bory, Nigra, and Tonkin Cane are a few other runners that do really well here, although the Nigra and the Tonkin Cane like it somewhat shady. Good Luck Kt

Wet_Puppy- You'll be fine. People like to tell bamboo horror stories, but they typically are passing on urban legends and, when questioned, admit that they actually haven't seen the problem themselves. I'd worry more about trees near my pool decking. Tree roots expand in diameter over time and can displace or crack sidewalks; bamboo rhizomes don't. Bamboo rhizomes also typically stay within about a foot or two of the surface, so I don't think you have to worry about them deep-diving. And even if they met up with your underground plumbing, there's no way for them to get in. Enjoy your pool and your bamboo. The only "horror story" about bamboo that's true is that it will spread if you are irresponsible and don't bother to maintain it over the years. Just remember to do some rhizome pruning with a shovel to keep the bamboo where you want it.

Here in Texas in 8b, my Oldhamii does just fine. I've had it in the ground for over a decade and once established, it only froze back one year but I think it not only had to do with the extreme cold that Winter, but the lack of water which was due to drought weather here. It used to have no northerly Winter protection from north winds but it only got occasional leaf burn at the tips of some leaves and at the top of the clumps. It reached over 40 feet tall here with culms over 4 inches in diameter. What makes Oldhamii great is it's erectness. It grows very upright. If you plant it in a protected area, it will probably do excellent. The first couple of years, you may want to protect it on those colder nights, but once it sizes up, it will usually just get some leaf burn. Keep it watered well on those cold nights also. It has gotten down into the single digits here twice since I planted mine, but they survived although they froze back somewhat. I usually don't see any leaf-freeze burn until the upper teens and/or if there is a constant strong wind with the cold weather. A beautiful plant. You will enjoy it. Kt

Yes, it is a beautiful bamboo. Very erect and huge!

I posted some pictures last year of them in the gallery. You may be able to find them if they are still there.

I tried to search for bamboo or giant timber bamboo and nothing came up. Wasn't sure if I was doing it right. I would love to see some photo's and post some of my own.
