Root Hormone = Faster Bulb Growth?

I was reading up on a product that makes roots grow on cuttings to clone plants. I was thinking what if i applied a bit the root hormone powder on the basal plates of hippeastrum's following the same directions for cloning plants.. Will that make my plants grow faster? Will the growth hormone work on the basal plate? I believe it will speed up the growing process as it will create more

roots.

I would realllly appreciate some comments, opinions and feedback!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I tried to IAA, without effect. What kind of hippeastrum do you mean? And preferably the ingredients of this product, please.

On our last year's order from Australia I put rootone which is the weakest hormone you can buy (over the counter) and I put it on roughly half my new bulbs before I potted them up. Sadly to say, I did not keep good records, but from memory, I would say that it was about 50-50 on both with and without the hormone. At the time I did not see any significant difference that would make me do this again. Be very careful that if you do experiment with this that you don't use a hormone that is too strong. We use several rooting powders that are significantly stronger at the nursery where we stick our rhododendron cuttings. You could burn them very easily.
Now this is just my unscientific opinion..but if you do try it be careful..

Basically, amaryllis bulbs are quite eager to root so why subject yourself to a carcinogen in powder form..dangerous to human health...if you do try it be careful...

I made several hardwood cuttings of Vitex agnus-castus (Chaste Tree) on November 8, 2007. They were then dipped in Green Light Rooting Hormone (purchased at Lowe's)and placed in styrafoam cups of 1/2 peat moss and 1/2 perlite mix, watered, and placed in a plastic zip-lock bag. First growth appeared November 21, 2007. Since then several cuttings have sprouted new leaves. As an experiment I cut several more today and repeated the process. I'll check them in a few weeks. I will try to cut a few more pieces some time in December and repeat the whole process. Needless to say there are no leaves on the plant at this time. The cutting are 3 to 4 inch pieces from a 12 inch branch. They are in the laundry room (no direct sun)on a shelf with a 60 watt bulb left on 24/7 temperature is a constant 70F +/- 5F

A very good hort guy was (just yesterday)telling me to work a fair amount of ag. cornmeal in to the soil when I plant bulbs. He said the cornmeal grows a fungus that eats the fungus that attacks your/my bulbs. I thought that was a wonderful thing to share. Another little thing he told me is that if you can't find the ag. cornmeal, you can use the ground corn feed that they feed baby chicks. He said it is the same thing. Hi! This may be too late to post, but just in case you're still curious... I had the same question and learned the answer from a reliable soure (University of Washington). They claim that the talc version of the r/h has an 8 month shelf life, even if refrigerated (which I'm assuming extends it to the max). Hardy plants in cold climates effectively hibernate over winter. Like bears these store energy before entering hibernation and then live off it during the winter, "emerge" in spring in a depleted condition. So when there is cutting of the roots and digging of these plants in spring they are being impacted at a time of the year when they are low in energy. However it is also true that the opening of stem buds in spring is what prompts the growth of new roots from cut root ends. So if dormant plants can be moved right before the tops come to life in spring then new roots will be generated immediately afterward. As with fall planting opportunity for success is maximized by timing it with specific relation to what state the stem buds are in. Winter: Activity minimal or effectively non-existent, depending on how cold it is Spring: Winter stem buds open, new shoots appear and may flower, new roots are formed Summer: Flowering or fruiting may occur, roots grow some Autumn: Fruiting may occur, winter stem buds form, existing roots elongate markedly (60% of annual total) Spring shoot and root growth is caused by the opening of the winter stem buds. Autumn root elongation is caused by the maturing of the winter stem buds. At both times hormones are sent from the buds to the root ends which cause these to grow. I see your point Donna. I am not sure when I would do this but am willing to try it on a few bulbs. I was thinking about using rootone as well. I'm just a bit curious :)... when i do try it i will be sure to keep record and present the results.

Hi guys,

Do you think it would make any difference if you rubbed the outer dry layer of the basal plate off and applied the hormone to the fresh parts of the basal plate?

I've not tried this and I've noticed that with hybrids they're "red' to go" *in living color hehe*.

Some of the species *excluding papilio* seem to root a lot slower? Maybe that is one reason why papilio is a force in the world of cultivation?
