Bees Leaving from Top of Hive

I have one hive of Carniolan bees. Starting early in the summer the bees began entering and leaving the hive from the top. The bottom entrance is not blocked and I can see no blockage or obstructions inside the hive that would prevent them from using the bottom entrance. We had a long, snowy winter here in Maine and I kept the hive going by feeding them beginning in late February with loose sugar spread on top of the inner cover. (I may have fed them too vigorously because early in the summer the hive swarmed.) Is there any problem with the bees entering and leaving from the top and how can I stop then from doing this?
