How to hide a stump, WS style (Pics)

I know I've posted a picture of this before, but I'm so happy with how it turned out. I never would have bought all the plants needed to fill this thing (never seen amaranth offered anyway!) Without wintersowing, it would be ivy.

I do not miss the messy hackberry that was there!!! It was an nasty tree.

Mid-Spring. You can't see them all, but they are there! Before planting the amaranth, I had purple millet in there, and something ate (earwigs I think) every single one of them. So we went to plant B...

No more stump!! The sunflower and the little yellow portulaca on the bottom left were volunteers. Next year there will be more!

Very nice! Those plants fill the spot in such a pretty way.

I understand what you mean about not missing a big pretty tree. We had two sycamores in the front yard. Each was over 100 feet tall and they were less than 20 feet from the house. Aside from dropping bark everywhere they used to scare me to death whenever we had big winds.

One had a big double trunk and I had visions of that splitting, going through the roof, and not slowing down until it crushed it's way to ground level. We ended up having both sycamores and two huge oaks taken down. The family rule is no trees that could kill us that close to the house.

You wintersow garden looks so much safer than that tree. Much easier for fall clean up too, I'd think. :)

What a nice bed! The amaranth looks great. The yellow goes well with it.

Yes Ma'am there is a winter sowers group on facebook!!! Trudi is trying to get the group number up to 1000 before the end of this sowing season. So spread the word!!! I also expected a cave verses the pretty kitchen you have. Yellow tones WILL NOT help that kitchen. You will end up having a kitchen in the throws of jaundice. ER and NICU docs will stop by just to help...really...not a good tone. Your counters are not black and brown LOL but they do lean towards a gray tone if I'm seeing it right on the computer screen (I mean a back tone, not the main tone) which again won't be helped with a yellow wall, even a soft one. I don't use BM paints, so I can't help you with colors in that family, but I would suggest you compare a Ralph Lauren tone to the BM deck and see if you can find it. It's called Writers Parchment and is a very soft tan. Use a semi-gloss finish for it's reflective value. You'll find this color will compliment the beautiful cabinets so much better than yellow. (And this from a girl who every shade of yellow to gold possible in her home). Honestly if it were my kitchen I'd go with a deep gold/burnt umber :P But I love rich tones and would want to really rich up those fab cabinets. Under cabinet lighting will really help and if you can get rid of that florescent thing and add directional lighting that would help as well. Stainless would help also as has been pointed out. But I don't think the black looks bad. Then again, I don't think the whole space looks dark :) so take that with a grain of salt LOL

Is there enough room between those two windows for the trim if the wall were flat? And is the trim painted? If so, I think I would try ripping the thin side trim at an angle. Simply measure the angle of the wall joint, divide in half, and rip the trim so the glued together piece fits in place. The only problem ----providing you have a table saw capable of that kind of rip(IMHO and experience a benchtop portable style TS will not do that) might be the miter at the top. You might need two different pieces of stock, since you will lose part of the width of the saw blade. Also, if you do try this suggestion, you do not necessarily need to glue the two pieces together before installing. Install the inner piece, then the outer. You can then use filler and sanding to hide the joint, then paint.

Looks like it's going to be very homey! I feel a little bad when I think of the condition our house has been in while our kids were growing up. Now that our daughter is a senior in HS, we're finally getting to the kitchen. When she comes home from college it'll be to a nicer house than she ever lived in. But spending time with them was always the priority, so a lot of good family memories were in the spare, unfinished house! A little OT, but something about your pictures brought up that bittersweet thought.

That is a good idea. We have had oak wilt come through here. I have so many stumps. Lgslgs Lol You wouldnt like it here. I live in the woods nothing but huge trees covering the house.... LOL Yup I worry also with big winds. Nice job I am also going to have to think something. My neighbor lady says the amaranth gets to 5 feet. Barb

Very very pretty. Love the amaranthus - I use to be scared to do too much amaranthus because of the reseeding factor but I have found the plants to be beautiful and provide dramatic color all summer whereas the traditional zinnias, marigolds, ect get a real tired look in August. You did a great job there....

love it! I did the same in my border covering the stump with ice plant - no one ever knew there was a rotting stump underneath - Every season chip away at the stump - you will be surprised when it eventually rots away

Thanks everyone. Lynnencfan, I am a little concerned about being taken over by amaranth too, but I figure it's in an enclosed circle, so hopefully will stay there (unless the birds spread it!)
Rosepedal, I have oak wilt too. We lost 1 about 5 years ago, and 1 in mid-stage now. So sad...
Carrie, I've started Ice Plant twice now, but it didn't make it either time. What's your secret?

I like the flower bed better ***smiling***, we had a black walnut tree that was huge and very messy, we hired someone to take it down, I sure do miss the shade but not the tree.
