Chocolate Joe Pye Report

Folks were chattering about the ratio of chocolate to regular Joe Pye from seed. I traded for a chocolate from Jeanne at the Columbus plant swap last fall, harvested seed, and winter sowed the bunch. I ended up with 10 large healthy plants that I have been unable to plant out due to the crappy weather we have had. I'm going to try in September to get them into the ground.

So, the answer for me is 6 chocolate and 4 regular. 60% came true. I don't know if this helps anyone or not.

I've always wondered about them. I've had a plant for four years now and have never collected the seeds, but this year I just might and it will be nice to inform traders that some do come true from seed.

I love information about what will probably happen from collected seed - any seed -- snapdragons, petunias, anything!

That's interesting about the Choc Joe. I also have a (purchased) plant and can put this information on the seed envies. The thing is, I'm not sure my purchased plant is as deep dark chocolate as it should be. I ought to take a picture of it to ask.

FWIW, Another plant along those lines is Heliopsis 'Loraine Sunshine' which is variegated-leaf Heliopsis. I would say about 20% are nicely variegated and the rest should be tossed.

I've got 6 of these plants, 3 were purchased at a nursery so these are presumed to be the true cultivar, and 3 were swap seedlings. There is not much difference in the coloring as far as I can see, maybe one of the swap plants is a little lighter. The original plant purchased about 5 years ago is the darkest, but it's also growing in the most sun and that may intensify the color. I have never had even one seedling from these plants - maybe because it blooms very late, and may not have time for the seeds to mature? I also mulch.

That's good to know! I have one in my back garden and love it. I would think it would reseed? No weeds are showing in that garden right now, and I did let the CJP go to seed last year, so I think I'll leave things alone and see if any babies come up. It would be nice. The mama plant is just starting to break ground as is the 'big other one' with green leaves and reddish flowers.

My H. Lorraine Sunshine came about 50-75% true. Of course there were variations to the extent of the varigation.

Bakemom, yes that's true about the extent of the variegation, but I heard the ones with the less-than variegation can go green in summer. Alos, as long as a grower has a gazillion seeds, and presumably a gazillion seedlings, why not choose only the best in a selective process and then when he goes to trade seed, that will be the dominant characteristic?

Vera, I'll save you some seed. Let's plan on a big seed trade this fall. We have similar taste, I can tell by your photos. Ok, maybe we don't, but I like your plants. muw-wah-hahah!
