Brugmansia, yellowing of leaves.

Got a very small cutting of a Brug from Reno_lynn(sp") a while back-- thanks again. It has been potted and moved indoor for this summer where it gets direct sun until about 10AM. I fertilize every two weeks and water it every 3-5 days.

Recently, the leaves are turning yellow. A landscaper said something about "nitrogen". I plan on moving this to a larger pot shortly. What can I do to adress my nitrogen problem?

Any help is appreciated.

James, try a fertilizer with a high nitrogen count. Nitrogen is the first number in the series, phosphate is the next number, then water soluble potassium. Good luck

james, I'm the only lynn reno around here, I'd have offered to help, but I'm a brug newbie- that's how I know I wasn't your brugs mom. Sorry! Mary's always a huge help though.

Just about any fertilizer works. I use a bloom booster (higher middle number) for my mature plants this time of year but many people use regular Miracle Grow and have good results. They are heavy feeders during the growing season and get fed weekly. You might want to consider giving your brug some epsom salts once a month (1 tbls/gal water) to help green it up. Another thing might be the exposure. Usually am sun with protection from the strongest afternoon rays is best but if your plant did well with afternoon exposure last year it might not be an issue. It's also common for the older lower leaves to yellow and drop.

Like kayjones says, the leaves will grow back!:) Dan- wow- such a long post!:) Yes, I finally opened my web store, because I am feeling a little better. I am still in pain but the meds help me get around a bit more. I'm also on vacation so I thought processing orders would be a lot less stressful during this time. :) Mango Crush is such a vigorous fast grower and bloomer. Mine hasn't started blooming yet, but it won't be long! Glad yours is doing well. I love Morelia! Which angels belong to the Aurea group? I always have a hard time remembering. What qualifies an angel to belong to that group? I would be so honored to trade for some of your new babies to trial for you. I haven't done any hybridizing yet, nothing is really blooming for me. My brugs are holding up well so far. The hottest it's been was 106*. I planted most in ground last year. Those in ground have a deep layer of composted horse manure over them, and I haven't had to hand water them yet! Thank God, I couldn't water them in my condition anyway! We are behind in our rain for the month so far. Get your list together soon, I'm selling the best angels fast! I have only a few special angels that are not listed on my site. Have to get some Murphy's to combat a few mites that I have. Looking forward to your email and photos when you can!

Maybe it's spider mites? Mine will drop leaves like that if I let it dry out and wilt, but I can never completely get rid of the mites. Your 'nasty bugger' might be something feeding on the mites, I don't think it's something damaging the plant. I usually treat every problem the same, spray with some safer's soap and then fertilize and keep watered and they usually bounce back faster than you think they will. If the leaf damage and mites get too bad I'll pluck all the leaves off before spraying and fertilizing and just wait a few days longer for it to bounce back. Oh, and the caterpillar is a tobacco hornworm. They feed on brugmansia as well as tomatoes.

Yeah, Lynn's the *canna* queen around here. heh, heh. Someone else is our brug queen, not sure she checks this forum these days.

Thanks Lynn, but actually we *all* try to help when we can. I have plants needing nitrogen too so I feel your pain on that subject.

Ah yes, seems i did get a canna from Lynn that day. It has matured into about ten new plants so thanks for that instead!

I replanted the Brug in a much larger pot this week. Also moved it from inside to a well shaded area outside that only receives a couple hours of morning sun. Will move it back inside soon if it seems too hot outside. I have been watering every four to six days inside and using liquid fish fertilizer every couple weeks and occassionally misting with liquid seaweed. Hopefully, the yellowing had to do with it outgrowing it's original pot.

Thanks for your input. I hope to be a much more frequent poster now that we have some serious landscape work to do.

I have a similar issue with a hibiscus. I thought it was either nitrogen or iron deficiency. I posted a pick on davesgarden.com and one of the members told me it was the iron. Here's the 411:

"Yes, it is chlorotic, and you have a iron deficiency. Go to Home Depot and pick you up some 'Chelated Iron'. It comes in a round cardboard container, kind of like a one of those cylinder type coffee creamer containers, with a pour or sprinkle side. Take it home and sprinkle it all around the bush into the ground. Follow the instructions on the container. Then water it in real good. I have a tree that I need to use this on every year. The stuff is amazing! Within 2 weeks the leaves go from almost albino white/yellow to a lush deep green."

Update, the Brug was replanted into a much larger pot and put in dappled morning sun. Most of the mature leaves(about 20) all fell off over the last two weeks while it adjusted to the heat outside. Luckily, the new growth is robust and all the leaves are a preferrable green, lush, color.

If there was still yellowing, or if we had to leave it in the small pot, i was going to use the chelated iron.
