Anyone growing M Cavendishii (not dwarf) outside in UK?

Is anyone growing M Cavendishii outside in the UK. Last year I left my seedling ones out all winter but it was a very mild winter, only dropping below 0 C three times all winter.

This year a particularly harsh winter is forecast (forcasting -20 C but I don't know where they get their figures from as there was no frost last year when they told us it was -15 C! - it was about +2 C)and we still have record high temps for October ever at the moment).

M Cavendishii is now too big to bring in. Has anyone any experience of overwintering these at low temperatures?

No experience, but this specie won't survive -6C.

Thanks, I will make sure it is clad if anything near -6 is expected.

Our official weather figures are wierd though. We get told we have had -15 C but there has been no ice and no frost and the swiss cheese plants are still invading the cherry copse, in fact they are growing and flowering when our weather centre are recording us as having -6.

I thin they don't allow for the gulf stream (near the sea) and obviously don't allow for my walled garden in a steep valley. I think I don't get any days per year below 0 C in my garden normally. This year might be different, but Paignton Zoo/botanical gardens (in the next gorge 300 metres from me) are also trying Cavendish outside this year. They have done well with a selection of ensete varieties this last few years.

My Pardisiaca flowered outdoors last winter. Why do bananas always pick winter? Is is a panic flowering when they are stressed by bad climate?

Joe Pye weed is a great plant in the right place, beautifully suited to swamps and wetlands. It is a very large plant with a robust presence. It has an appealing scent. I don't think it would be well-suited to a small English garden - it's a space eater. I don't care if people don't like the plants I grow or the way I garden. Because our gardens are public, we see the gamut of visitors. Most are kind. Occasionally, there is a gardening snob wandering through, but I have learned to ignore them. But everybody's garden is different and their experience of any given plant is bound to reflect that difference. I didn't invent any of the plants I grow, so I cannot take it personally if anyone dislikes a particular plant. Also, my own tastes change. Plants I loved 15 years ago may now be banned from the garden, or they just might be working their way back into my own top 10 list.

Anyone else growing broms outside in z8b/9a?

I've been growing some here in the UK for a few years, Billbergia nutans, Fasciularia bicolor,Puya Berteroniana, Chilensis, Mirabliis with no problems. This year I got ,Nidularium fulgens,Aechmea recurvata'' Aztec gold'' .Dyckia, Remotifolia , Frigida and a Greigia sphacelata all waiting for places to be planted There are still a few others I'm after but they are hard to come by here.

I beg your pardon for misspeaking. They are the big philodendron, not the monstera deliciosa. However, now I DO have two of the monstera babies, in small pots, and it is like having a sea monster breaking up a ship! They are coming OUT of those tiny pots, and they are just BABIES. I cannot wait to see what they do this spring and summer outdoors. I will of course do all in my power to protect them if they get too big to take in, even if it means I have to deploy my 28' parachute over the whole roofless garage/greenhouse. As CeentralCali369 commented, I will try to keep them out of direct sunlight, a lot harder now that we've just removed 6 trees over 100' tall from our property.

Monstera loves wet conditions. As for Stelitzia regina, it suvives outside fine, but does not flower if overwintered outdoors. Strelitzia nicoli survives and lfowers prolifically in our climate. I overwinter Muse Basjoo, Musa Lasiocarpa and Musa Sikkimensis outdoors in the open, and I overwinter M Itinerans outdoors, but sheltered under my fruit trees. All other varieties I end up bringing in at least for a few weeks most years. If you want to see what tropicals thrive in our climate, visit Colleton Fishacre gardens! They specialise in tropicals which grow here, and are amass with metallic blue flowering puyas, king proteas, timber bamboo and all sorts.
