Comments (2)Everything I've read about this plant is that it can take full sun, but the leaves can scorch if you let it dry out. If you're planting it with drought hardy plants, I would go with a different plant in that spot. If not, I think it would be fine in the hot sun. I wouldn't give up on your other Joe pye weed yet! It's very slow to emerge from the ground. Maybe give it two more weeks? It's super hardy....See More'Little Joe' Joe Pye weed
Comments (6)it gets huge. at least 5'. We had this exact conversation 2 years ago, but its gone now. I tried pinching mine early in the season as an experiment to keep the size in check, but it didn't work out. It delayed them way too long and they were too small. I divided and moved mine last fall to at least be in back of the border so the height didn't block out other things. And it is pretty and a butterfly magnet, but watch out! This is in August where the section on the left was not cut back. The two sections on the right were cut back. Not sure just when. Its written down somewehre....See MoreJoe pye weed
Comments (20)There are several cultivars of Joe Pye in this area, and some get taller (e.g. I've seen ones with purple stalks that get very tall, while gateway for example is definitely smaller. And sometimes they are mislabelled at nurseries. (I have several varities growing side by side; one has a purple stalk, the other a spotted stalk). You can cut any of them back in June by about half here and they will grow back smaller and bushier. This is not a plant to put in a small space and I wouldn't use it in a formal garden either. Along a wood line it is cool to just let it go and have a good old time....See Morewieslaw59
