Amaryllis/Hippeastrum

Is this an amaryllis seedling?

Hi everyone. I decided to make it a little project to get amaryllis seeds and try to grow them. All my pods failed but a friend mailed me hers (big fat pods too!) and I planted them in a flowerbox and then covered it to act as a greenhouse.

Looking in the flowerbox, I found a seedling but I'm confused because it looks like a vegetable is coming up. I used a brand new bag of soil but it's possible that an unwanted seed may have come with it.

To doublecheck, I figured I'd ask the members here.

Is this a usual appearance? I thought little grass-like blades would be the first to come.

I think they may have dropped their leaves so they could grow new leaves that are better suited to their new conditions. It's good news that the bulbs are decent size and look good! I'm no expert on hippeastrum, this is only my second year growing them. However, I have noticed that most of the plants I've recently moved outdoors have not taken the move well. Some are dropping their leaves and growing new ones. Presumably the leaves they grew while indoors were suited to the lower light levels... and now they need leaves that can handle the higher light that is available outdoors. I think your bulbs will be just fine. Cut back a bit on the watering until you see new leaves emerge. Instead of watering from above, you may want to try watering from below (by setting the pots in a container of water and allowing them to wick up moisture for about 15 minutes at each watering interval). Wow! Quick response! :) From 2007 to 2010, they grew in a big flower box. A little after spring of 2010, I stuck them in the ground. This is a picture from the bed last year: Amaryllis Bed. The middle clump are the ones that I grew from seeds. They also get full sun. I used Google to look around and it seemed like the best option was for full sun? I do have a banana plant there though. I expect it might get big enough this year to cast some shade. hehe. I also fertilized regularly as I was told this would help them along. I don't know their official names but the seeds came from the red Amaryllis that have a bit of white/yellow to their 'throat'. There's also two other Amaryllis in there. There's one deep red Amaryllis - no other color to it. And there's one pink/white Amaryllis. I don't know if they've been cross-pollinated. I just know at the time that the 'mother' is the red w/colored throat. I had a lot of red w/colored throat blooming at the time before I collected the seeds. None of the amaryllis anywhere have sent up flower buds yet so I'm still hoping.

Can you post pictures of the parents? Is the hybrid name "Christmas amaryllis", as that is usually a class of bulbs ready to be forced to bloom at Christmas...so I'm not sure if your describing the type or if someone told you that's the name. Can you clarify? thanks...

soultan - It turned out to be a wild fern. It has these amazingly tiny leaves that look just like the full grown thing.

It's frustrating that none of the seeds are growing. I guess with the next pod I just got, I could try the water floating thing.

Hi dragonstone,
How long has it been since you planted the seeds? I use the floatation method and some seeds take up to 2 weeks, others send out roots after a few days. Maybe your seeds are just a little slow to sprout.

I believe it was the third of June that I planted them. Haven't had anything since.

soultan - No. I removed it. I already have enough of those growing around here. I don't need one taking over a flowerbox. hehe.

Next time try both planting in the ground and floating some and see which works best.

I personally prefer to float them only because I can see exactly what they are doing. I do admit planting them out into soil is a pain.
