Hi!

There are a number of small flowered ones that are surprisingly TET.

I can't say for sure, I suspect that all that you have listed would be Tets. Since I do not have all of them, I really can't say for certainty.

Perhaps Hans-Werner would know?!?!?!???

Thanks Ann! I tend to believe what you say since I crossed the 2 small flower ones with some of the large flower ones a month ago and they have made some really nice big seed pods. Of course, not knowing for sure if they were all TET, these crosses were attempts, I had to try and see what would happen. I wont know for sure till I harvest the seeds or even before I sow them, but the pods are doing really well!

That's too bad the sellers of these plants don't indicate the ploidity of their plants like they do with the dayliles for instance...

This is my first try at crossing amaryllis, so I hope I succeed to some degree, I'm more used to crossing orchids, but I'm now getting to some other plants as well such as daylilies, iris, etc.

Breeding Daylilies is rather similar to breeding Hippeastrum... I would say that if you've been successful in breeding Orchids, breeding Hippeastrums should be fun and easy! It would be very helpful, indeed, if the Hippeastrum ploidy were included in the catalog information, as is done with Daylilies... but, so far, we have to figure it out for ourselves... Ann has been incredibly helpful in sharing her ploidy knowledge!

I think you'll find that breeding Hippeastrums is an interesting and fun hobby... good luck!

Thanks jodik! Indeed, I was quite successful with orchids and yes, I do have a lot of fun trying myself at something else. What I learned with orchids is very useful even if it doesn't apply 100% all the time.

Here is a picture of the seed pod (Fairytalte x Matterhorn) one month after pollination. Big, fat, hard to the touch, the stem is very rigid.

It's a very healthy looking seed pod, to be sure! I think the offspring will be very interesting!

I don't know very much about breeding orchids... although, flasking looks to be a bit beyond what I have the capacity to do here! I'm only just starting my orchid collection, and only just learning the fine points of keeping them all happy and healthy... I haven't even gotten one of them to flower as of yet! They're all young, one or two being close to blooming size... it will be quite a while before I'm ready to try my hand at pollinating any of them!

So far, though, all four of my nice little orchid plants are alive and looking good... so, I must be doing something right! I was gifted with an Epidendrum radicans cutting, and immediately got the "bug" to collect more! I've since added a Cymbidium, Dendrobium keiki (another generous gift), and an Encyclia... all are in what I hope is the right spot in my home, and all look green and happy! Breeding them won't become an issue until after I can successfully get each one to re-flower for me... and since they haven't yet flowered for the first time, that's a long way off!

In the meantime, I'm having a ball collecting and breeding Hippeastrums! I've got some cute little seedlings coming along, and in another 2 or 3 years, I'll start seeing the results of my breeding attempts!

Breeding and growing plants from seed, especially our chosen types, certainly teaches patience!
