VEry nice. I'll have to give it a try too this winter when everything's buried in snow. ;) Mine will be safe indoors unless I can't pay the gas bills.

Are we any closer to getting you to move? You proved that bamboo can be grown in Zone 4. Now it's time to try something easier...

I'm already dreaming WAY ahead to retirement. I'm still not sure where to find the supreme place to live comfortably with bamboo. I have it narrowed down to somewhere in Zhejiang. Or maybe I could opt for 100% RH and have Moso in SC? Or maybe further south in the gulf region. Oh Jeez, scratch that. I dunno. Well, at least there aren't any bamboo mites and fire ants here to battle. I can't understand why they don't appreciate 20 below zero temps.

Ironically my one ONLY goal when I graduated high school was to move out of Wisconsin!

To this day it is probably still the only goal that I have accomplished...other than quitting smoking!

Those are great accomplishments. I can't even seem to kick the arctic Wisconsin habit. The only way I'm going to succeed is if you keep showing me all those tropical clumpers and bamboo seedlings of yours.

Don't jump the gun. I got lots of new growth out of cuttings but many never did make roots and eventually died. I had one culm last a year without any new roots until it died. Theres alot of energy stored in those culms. Any one ever get a rootless culm to last > 1 yr? I think thats the only way to be sure you have something viable although most that don't take look dead within 4 months.

Nomadh, where in SoCal are you? you have almost my same climate zone :), maybe we can share some experiences in growing bamboo in hot zones.

and we can begin with new growths from cuttings, so far 9 of my cuttings from a B. vulgaris are having brand new growths from the part of the culm that wasnt under the soil (is not a new shoot is a new branch), so, how much time do I have to wait to know for sure when is time to repot those culms? my cuttings have 2 weeks only and the new growths are really small now, I have like 20 culms and branches cuttings planted in a big pot together so, I really need to know the rigth time to repot in order to prevent having all the roots mixed up, you can check thise pot as well as my bamboo station here

I would give it at the least 8 weeks, the gently dig around one to check for rooting. Otherwise wait until new shoots appear then you could almost guarantee it has rooted.

2 months then, so, that gives that it will be december and as far as I know its no a good month for repoting, maybe I should will let them where they are until next spring.. any coment or advice about it webgator?

I'm curious what species you were trying to propagate?

I have had great success with B vulgaris and B beecheyana using single node culm cuttings. I've recently tried B doli silverstripe the same way and the growth looks promsing. My Vitatta has experienced massive growth this season and I will be propagating this also in the Spring.

There are other species that just simply don't propagate that well using any method other than division.

I've previously propagated B Multiplex "Silverstripe" by burying the whole culm, much like I did for this section of "A Karr".

As for a "A karr" update, it produced a new shoot about 2 feet tall and pencil thick. Once the culm hardens and starts to branch I will dig and check for roots. Hopefully I'll have a pic tomorrow.
