Comments (12)De-glaze or "Hone" same meaning. Yes that is exactly what you should do if it needs it. The cylinder walls will be a black stainish color if there is a "glaze" to remove. I've opened up twenty year old engines and found cross hatch still visible with nice clean walls. Thats the beauty of steel lined cylinder walls. I was just cautioning you to not get out of hand with the hone. just enough to clean it up, not bore it out. You say it runs great, then why buy a overhaul kit? Don't buy some aftermarket kit because then you'll have a piston and rings made in Taiwan or something unless thats what you want. New pistons and etc are still available through Toro but be prepared to shell out some cash. I would keep that piston if its in good shape, meaning no scuffs or scratches as its a genuine OMC part. If you really want just replace the rings thats probably all it would need. Mabe get some new seals and a reed valve. Re-kit the carb and walla new mower under $30. But its you're machine you should do what you want. I'm just trying to save you a bunch of work. But then again total teardowns are good learning, especially when you over torque a rod bolt and throw it about twenty minutes into setting you're new rings and totally destroying the engine and casing and all that work, time and money. Have fun and we'll be here if you need. Neal...See MoreTissue Culturing the variegated AeAe? Soon!!
Comments (42)"you can buy great bananas in any market cheaply. You KNOW the whole idea is the fantastic foliage.Who wouldn't want to grow one?" I think that is highly debateable. People grow different plants for different reasons and one of the big attractors IMO for many people to grow bananas is not only the joy of producing their own bananas but the belief that not only may this allow them access to cultivars which are not in your average grocery store but also that the same bananas home-grown would taste better. I don't know about you but the only bananas at my grocery store are Cavendish unless I want to visit an Asian market. I personally have never seen Ice Cream or any of the other popular fruiting varieties for sale at VONS where I live. Laurence...See MoreAE-AE transplant update
Comments (22)I also have California Gold from Jeff, and have done extensive research on it. It *MAY* have some Philippine origin to it, based on story of Jeff on where he first got it. I have given away for free or for exchange, two of my California Gold pups. I can surely trade it with Ae-ae, or perhaps do it the hard way, like auctioning the California Gold pups on eBay and then buying the Ae-ae for only $99 from an online source. I was just wondering why pay more than $100, when there is an online source that sells them for only $99 without the hassle of a bidding war? As far as I know, there is no online source for California Gold, only occassionally from Jeff Earl when he auctions the pups at eBay. I have two California Gold pups at the moment, but they are 4 ft tall pups, would be willing to trade with whatever sized Ae-ae. Ae-ae and Kru have the same cold sensitivity in our area. One of my potted Krus have died out on me completely when left outside for the winter, it hasn't resprouted. Ae-ae would have the same cold sensitivity, unless it is planted in the ground, it will not survive if left out during the winter. The kru that was planted to the ground, it dies back to the ground level during winter, unlike the other cold hardy ones such as California Gold, Dwarf Brazilian, Gold finger, Misi Luki, Dwarf Namwah, etc, only the leaves die out during the winter, their trunks remain solid and green and resprout at the trunk come spring time, enabling them to fruit in our zone. It will be more work in our zone to take care of Ae-ae if I want it to produce fruits, but would like to have it as novelty plant. California Gold are among the last of the bananas to have their leaves damaged during the winter, of course, nothing beats my Sikkimensis which did not suffer frost bite on the leaves last winter (which was milder than average in zone 9)....See MoreStay Away from A&E Factory Service - don't let Maytag send them!
