Hoods, cfm's, and do I *really* need as much as they say?
Comments (9)Currently I have no ventilation. I don't even have a stove pipe, so we sometimes have a lovely "gas" smell in the kitchen. I do little frying/sauteeing b/c the wall behind the stove gets so gross! So I'm looking forward to doing more! But only on one burner at a time. And the griddle is strictly for pancakes (so no fat frying). The stove is 39", so I'll need the 42" hood. Eventually I'll have a cabinet unit on one side only. I *think* the 600 would be between $200-400 more (I was quoted 1471 for 400cfm at 18" high vs 1855 for 600cfm and 30" high. So those prices encompass 2 different heights as well as blowers. And rats: just realized those prices probably don't include those nifty cute bands that give the hood its retro look. Oh shoot!!!! Why does everything stylish have to be soooooooo expensive!!!!!???????TheHusband and I are not $2,000-hood-people. Rats, rats, rats!!!!!!! The Modern Aire is just much more beautiful than the Vent-a-hood. Francy...See Morehow much pump do I really need???
Comments (4)OK bro, You know I hold you with the highest respect but lets see how much fun you would have vacuuming with that light a pump. Your probably right in that filtering power is OK but to vacuum, no way. Been there, done that, won't go back. The 3/4 HP is in my opinion, the right choice. It reduces his power consumption and provides enough suction for vacuuming or running a floor sweep. Sctt Scott...See MoreHow much do you really need?
Comments (7)I sincerely doubt you are insurable at this point. Most plans would require you pay a high percentage over even the Standard rate, or make you wait at least a year before writing coverage on you. celticmoon is correct on the healthcare costs. A comprehensive health insurance costs slightly over $1K/mo. average for a couple. The advantage is that they can't drop you since it is a continuation of coverage. Also, wasn't there something in the President's stimulus plan about helping to pick up some of the cost of COBRA insurance for the unemployed - although I'm not sure that would cover self-termination/retirement, it may be restricted to those who are laid off. Maximum you would want to take is a 4% distribution annually. I have no idea what the immigration policy is in England, but your dollars would not go far as currently the US dollar is weak vs the pound, about $1.64/one pound. Canada's immigration policy varies per province. British Columbia is now almost completely closed to immigration unless you have $300K cash and intend to open a business. I think some of the other provinces are more open to immigration, but you will be contending with more severe weather. It's no joke how cold it gets in Calgary (my MIL's relatives live there so she visits regularly...in summer!). If you are really strapped for cash and want to retire, I'm afraid going South of the border is your best alternative. There are many cities with US ex-pats and very good healthcare. We have friends who have had to move out of the US because they couldn't afford to retire here. You should note that Medicare does NOT cover anything if you live outside the US. Medical care in South and Central America can be very good, however, and is inexpensive by US standards. Panama, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Mexico all have large ex-pat communities....See MoreHow much do kitchen cabinets really cost???
Comments (33)All cabinets are not created equal. There are many variations of materials used in the construction. Is the question is how long do you want the cabinets to last? What is the style, if you are looking for an inset cabinet door your options reduce greatly for stock cabinetry. If you are thinking of semi custom, do the finishes for the semi custom order match perfectly with stock cabinets in the order? Is there edge banding on Plywood that may come off the shelving or the face of the cabinet if it has a euro box. With stock cabinets will there be gaps that need to be filled with filler strips, detracting from the overall symmetry of your kitchen. All wood construction usually has plywood for the cabinet box and a face frame of hardwood, no particle board. Custom cabinets, with a factory finish completed at the same time for a uniform look, with no edge banding, or unnecessary filler strips, may be worth an additional expense. Those who have had a kitchen remodel done know that it is not something that you want to do often. For a little more money to have a functional, beautiful, well designed kitchen to wake to in the morning is money well spent....See MoreSteveInNC
