Overwintering WS/SS Perennials

This was my first years WS/SS. I am hooked!! But now I have a question about overwintering WS/SS Perennials. (I do have some WS perennials I would like to move for a new bed next year ) I have heard some of you say you pot them up and put them in a holding bed, here's my silly question...do you put the pots in the ground or let them set on top? Would it make any sense to overwinter some in my walk in container? This has been a chilly season for us in Upstate NY, how long can I SS for? I am in hopes of an extended Indian Summer since we have not really had one so far.

You have all been so helpful! Thanks in advance for your knowledge!
