Pink Rain Lily... Garden Tour #7

The rains we've had this spring have hampered my attempts to get things planted... but they've also helped the gardens to become the colorful living painting that they are...

A bit of "rain" from the watering can even helps the indoor plants to complete their cycle of bloom... this is a pink Rain Lily that popped up a day or two after getting a good drink...

This is supposed to be a Mock Orange shrub, but there's no scent...

And another red rose... the scent in the air is positively heady!

I can't wait to try my hand at roses. Is "knock out" roses a specific name? This may sound weird but in the medical research field they have these things called knock out mice-- won't go into detail but they're essentially a made to order mouse!

Love the color of the columbines!!!! That is Colorado's state flower, if I'm not mistaken. If you go hiking in the mountains you'll often see meadows full of them-- sometimes even above the tree line.

Ah, I'm missing summertime... Sierra, I prefer the Rocket snaps only because they are somewhat taller. The Ribbon bloomed a little earlier and were also nice colours. Either are long lasting as cuts. A trick to them is to always keep them upright - they're tips will turn up toward the light if you lay them them down, even for a little while. This tends to drive me somewhat NUTS!! Cut when the bottom 1/3 of the florets are open and strip all foliage from below the water line and they should last a week. They're a popular bouquet and I'll be growing at least 2 and maybe 3 beds of them this year, staggering their maturity dates. We don't have a florist in town (which tends to get me a-thinkin'!) and the sad little overpriced bouquets at the grocery store leave too much to be desired so I rarely have fresh flowers in the house in winter. You're right, they're not the same - in the first place there is usually absolutely no scent - may as well put silk flowers in a vase! Hot Biscuits with sunflowers go well, as do Velvet Curtains. My personal favorite is just sunflowers, though, either a mix or all the same kind but without filler. I've posted some pics of my Christmas crafts over on the conversations forum. I've started using Mediterian fan palm leaves, which I have growing in my yard, to line hanging baskets. I lay it in while green, then put plastic with a hole in the bottom on top of them, and then the potting soil. I cut the palm leaves evenly along the top after the potting soil has settled in. It's been working very well. Before I thought of the palm leaves, which are very long lasting, I lined with deer netting then put a thin layer of mulch from the tree trimers, then plastic and potting soil. If you like the look of coconut liner some places sell it by the foot. You could use it and then line with plastic to keep it looking nice longer. Just some ideas that maybe people can use .... Knock Out is a series of roses, Ryan... there are reds, pinks, rainbow, yellow, doubles... they're considered landscaping or ground cover roses. They're very cold hardy, self-cleaning, low and mound shaped, and they're incredibly easy to care for. I just lightly tip prune in early spring, just to remove any dead wood, and that's about it. The only thing I'm not thrilled with is that the flowers are more single than double, in petal numbers. I prefer a fuller rose. But I would recommend them to anyone not familiar with roses, who wanted to try growing some. They're very reliable! They even smell nice! And because of their size and ease of growing, they make wonderful additions to any garden or landscaping!

Wait until you see the next set of rose and allium pictures! We have some real beauties in bloom now! I've got the batteries charging for the camera, so I'll probably try to get some pictures tomorrow... or today, I should say... it's almost morning!

It also looks like there's a new scape growing on the Swan Lake White garden amaryllis! For smaller bulbs, they're proving to be more prolific than I expected... so that's nice.
