I have too many seedlings-want some?

Well after all of you walked me through the process of pollinating this winter, encouraging and enabling and sharing seeds even, I have way too many seedlings. I will happily share with anyone who would like some of the crosses I have. I want to keep maybe 3 or 4 of all the different varieties I have. Hey Cindeea! With the heat we are having now, you might need to send them express. It would be nice if those interested could share in the postage/mailing cost.

I am trying to rotate my crops, but I'm afraid I do not have much space for my garden so my squash will not be too far from where they were last year. :-/ Darn, I do not want to trap those borers in with my squash. Is it true they stop laying eggs after a certain date? I like to start planting as soon as possible but if I can delay by keeping my seedlings inside longer... I am burning all the plants/compost/waste from last year. Late last summer I had one zucchini hill left and I resorted to chemical pesticide to kill the remaining squash bugs. Not proud of the chemicals I used but hopefully it will put a dent in the population for this year. We had a very mild winter. I expect the pests to have easily survived.

Too many Sassafras seedlings -- HELP -- I'm losing the battle

I appreciate this discussion, thank you for all your comments. I thought I was alone with a mystery problem. Getting rid of these sassafrass suckers or seedlings has been impossible. The roots are too deep in established beds to dig out. The later comment about an established sassafrass tree dying might be a clue as to what's going on over here. There was a really big Norway maple on the neighbor's property that they took down about 12 years ago. That's allowed a little Norway maple to flourish on our property to create a lot of shade. Also a lot of Sassafrass trees popped up on the neighbor's property, and we let one grow on our property. Ever since then the suckers come up everywhere and don't stop no matter how we slice and dice and pull out as much as we can. The little ones are sprouting up ALL OVER, by the dozens, and we've dug down 2 feet in the places where we can and we still don't get the whole root out. Use caution with sassafrass. It may be native but there are some natives that become invasive pests, and sassafrass seems to be one, along with some rudbeckia and a few others. I agree about the maples, especially if it's a Norway Maple, which are an invasive non-native. I've seen some maples here on Long Island, I think they're called swamp maples, they appear to share space with other plantings more peacefully than Norway Maples. I would never have considered round up but some compelling points are made above. Makes me wonder if the salt, vinegar and soap I spray on poison ivy leaves would work on the sassafrass suckers.. I have them well wrapped in damp paper towel, maria then shreaded newspaper. I think they'll be OK

Peggy, I am going to the post office today. I am sending about 20 or so in all different stages. The largest seedling is either a Red Lion or a Minerva from 2004. Please open the package over a trash can as I filled it with shreaded paper and it will make a mess if you don't. Let me know if it all arrives ok.

They will probably do fine if you wrap the bulbs themself (loosely) in slightly damp paper towel. Use a sandwhich bag or a piece of plastic wrap to cover the paper towel and keep it from getting the box wet. This will preserve the moisture, but do wrap the base of the that with a rubber band or something and leave the leaves exposed to the air.

I agree that they should ship fine under those conditions, but the recepient should have pots ready to transplant them, and they will need to put the potted newcomers in filtered shade for at least the first few days and gradually move them to more sun.

I have found that seedlings are most forgiving, as long as they do not dry out. They like LOTS of water!

I will be watching for them...always afraid something will 'cook' in my black mailbox. I have a bed that gets some morning sun but is shaded for the heat of the day; just put some other babies in that bed...these were unknowns so will be a nice surprise when they bloom.

Thank you so much! You are a doll. I am waiting on a swap of Red Lion seeds...he says it looks like the pod is going to burst! LOL Also some seeds from an Orange.

I am just about to plant the seeds I got from you...
And I just wanted to send you a few seeds, but I see you have too many seedlings yourself, so you might opt for a mature bulb when my seedlings grow large enough... Just let me know. I still have "surprise" seeds for you if you want them... Just let me know how much you can handle, or if you want the mature bulb later.

Soultan....What I meant by TOO MANY is too many of the same kind. I am trying to limit myself to just 3 or 4 of each variety. I'll take new stuff for sure!! Do you have my addy? I am not sure I still have your email but if you go to my member page and click on send me an email it gives you my AOL address. Mature bulbs, seeds I don't have are always appreciated! Spreading the wealth is what I am doing! lol

Not yet. Received two other swaps with so many goodies I thought it was Christmas...a mamma crinum and one of her daughters and 4 other daughters off another plant plus a variegated ginger, a chocolate and an orange mint, 2 plants that I have no idea what they are LOL, pink rain lilies, some lavender oxalis PLUS seeds for Lavender rain lilies, Z. citrina, Z. candida and Formosa lily!

Christmas in June...good thing your pkg didn't arrive today, too, might have been more excitement than I could take in one day LOL

I will let you know when the lil darlings arrive.

Peggy, I am so surprised since all the other plants I sent on the same day have been received. Now I am getting worried that the little babies being in transit this long may not make it....please let me know and also their condition when they arrive. I feel bad you didn't get them yet. I will be over on the east coast all day tomorrow visiting my cuz, will check in when we get home.

If you self polinate or cross similar types you may get identical seedlings. If you cross two totaly different types you may not get even two idetical ones.Only six 2005 seedlings of my CHARISMA/PHILIDELPHIA bloomed this year and each was different, as you can see in my SEEDLINGS 2005 posting.If I have the space I would keep all seedlings till they bloom.

Since I don't keep track of the pollinations, I just like to pollinate all the time and collect the seeds, I will not be able to send you known crosses. So I guess, we will wait till the bulbs mature and you fall in love with one of the flowers. I can't wait myself.

Received the plants yesterday....Thank YOU! I'm so excited. I am doing search to see what each original plant looks like...not familiar with Bolero or Sprekelia Formosissima (that is a mouthful! LOL).
