bamboo rhizomes, will they be kept inbounds by mowing?
Comments (7)As I mentioned above, they will run farther from the grove if given a chance for culms to develop leaves. I know a man who used a shredder only once a year to shred around a grove next to his hayfield, but the shoots kept popping up farther and farther away. Two things...he used a shredder, which left culm stumps that remained there and many grew limbs and leaves from these stumps, giving the bamboo a reason to keep spreading. Secondly, he did this once a year. The new shoots emerged and had a month or so to develop before being cut down. The man I mentioned in an earlier post above, cut around his grove at least once a week and cut as low as he could which gave the newly emerging culms no chance to produce food and spread. Also I agree that if a grove gets too 'thick' with culms, it will produce and store food in it's rhizomes quickly and will spread farther than a 'thinned' grove. The first year that I planted my black bamboo from a 1-gallon pot, it sat dormant till late Summer which it then put up a shoot 15 feet from the original plant. Bamboos will act differently in different soils and different climates, so what I see happen here may or may not happen in other parts of the country, so that needs to be considered. I can only speak from what I have experienced here. Kt...See MoreBlack bamboo rhizome control
Comments (1)You can control them this way. The downside is that it will do nothing to reduce the root system and you could find yourself dealing with quite a few shoots in a few years. I control my bamboo by pruning the root system, and this helps concentrate where new growth comes up. If you did that, you would likely have somewhat denser growth in your original planting area....See Morenew to black bamboo - how big a space
Comments (13)I really wish my bamboo was nearly as invasive and aggressive as many people say. I planted some black bamboo last year and so far got one shoot. I'm waiting for some shooting this year and so far nothing. Kudzu you do such a good job defending bamboo. You should have a file for cutting and pasting to answer the same old questions about crazy run away bamboo. Question how do I get this crazy run away bamboo grooves that I hear so much about. My experience with bamboo in about 2 years MOSO so far not real shoots Some Philo species unknown, A few small shoots this year Bambusa multiplex goldengoddess starting to look like something finally about 5 feet tall b multiplex alphonse karr (best performing clumper for me so far about 3 feet tall from a tiny division) b multiplex silverstripe OK performer time will tell Point is Bamboo (at leat for me) has not been an out of control monster. Anyone out there want to give me some evil bamboo to see what I can do with it?...See Morehow tall will black bamboo grow in SF bayarea?
Comments (15)Mine is in a 15 gallon pot and is over 6 feet tall. I got it from a neighbor who had a hard time removing it. It was torture work for him digging it out of the ground. As I recall, it was at least 10 feet tall and he tried to restrain it by limiting the water. The bamboo was cracking his walkway. Mine's not happy in a 15 gallon pot. It wants a larger one. It got tall very fast and needs daily watering or the leaves dry out and look awful. Well watered, it's a beautiful plant. I like it best in 1/2 day sun. It hates full shade and starts to die off. I think what I need to do with mine is split it into 2. What I like about growing it in the 15 gallon pot is that I can move it around and the height is nice behind other tropicals. It provides welcome shade where I want it. The dark color sets off the green leaves and is showy. I think it's worth having but I know I don't want to have to dig this plant out of the soil ever....See Morekudzu9
