Shavings are actually beneficial when manure is being composted. For those with room,turing worms loose in a few cu yds,keeping it damp and covered with old carpet yield's more worms and a soil admendment second to none.

If you're wanting a big enough load to make it worth his while, he might tow it for you. I had about 7 yds loaded (all my Odyssey could tow) and he said he'd tow it for me if we finished filling the trailer - about 12-14 yds. His neighbor has a front-end loader that he may be able to load it with, if timing is right. I'd guess his pile still measures about 30 yds. The manure is mixed with amish sawdust - no walnut - and some straw. The sawdust is partially composted by urine. Most of the "horse apples" are well rotted. Their 3 horses are rotated on 3 pastures and are supplemented with hay - but not alfalfa hay, as he says it's too rich an energy source for their casual riding. Weed seed should be minimal. I'll layer it thick under my roses and add some nitrogen. This year the sawdust should also serve as a mulch. By spring it will need more.

I can't say specifically about Mequon, but when I started composting 20 some years ago I just checked the Yellow Pages for horse stables and picked the nearest ones. tj
