How close do you plant a Magnolia tree
Comments (1)I'm not sure which Magnolia you are referring to (there are dozens of species and varieties deciduous and evergreen). But to get back to your question, I don't think it's a good idea to plant ANY tree too close to your house or other trees (too much competition for water--magnolias are water-loving). Magnolia roots tend to be thick without too many fibrous roots. It is also true that they tend to be shallow rooted. They are also not the best trees to recuperate from transplanting (so you pretty much want to avoid transplanting wherever you do put it). I made a mistake of planting a M. grandiflora too close to my house. It eventually was removed as it was growing into the house (branches not the roots). When you plant, you really have to consider what the tree will look like in 10 to 20 years (assuming it thrives and continues to grow). If you reply with specifics (the species you like, your zone, sun exposure, etc.), someone may be able to give you a safe minimum planting distance. Good luck!...See MoreIs it Safe to be Surrounded by trees so close?
Comments (20)A lot of what I'm about to say has been said before but here's my opinion: If the house has been there several years the trees should be stable.I'd check the closest ones to the house for decay etc. If they do not show any signs of possible failure I personally would leave them. I don't know much about Loblolly Pines but another thing to take into consideration is how wide and how deep the roots commonly get on the species and how strong the wood is. Like Ken said, you are in a grove of trees which protect each other. A few blocks away there's a pine tree so close to a house it's about an inch away from the gutter. The house was built around the tree about 30 or so years ago. It's a really cool looking house. I'm not saying you want a tree that close to your house- that's too close. But I am saying to really put good thought into which trees you'll remove before you remove them. You don't want to remove every tree near the house and then regret it later on. That's just what I'd do. I'm no expert but hiring a certified arborist whould be a great idea. He or she can tell you if the trees are risks or not....See Morehow close can I plant to my palm tree

Comments (0)I wonder if anyone has knowledgable advice. I live in Oakland, CA. I bought 3 apple trees this weekend. A pink lady on m7 rootstock, a anna apple on m7 rootstock, and a granny smith on m111. I wanted to plant all three in same hole in our small front yard. I am committed to pruning to keep size down. I have 3 questions: 1) Can I plant these in same hole with different rootstocks? 2)The nursery said I can litterally plant them inches apart in same hole as long as I prue internally growing branches off-is this true? 3) How big will the roots grow and will they damage the cement border of the 8 x 10 garden bed? Thank you...See MoreFledgeling_
