But maybe the chocolate color doesn't show up until the tree is bigger? Some plants are green when young and later develop their characteristic colorations beyond green. I haven't read on chocolate mimosa but maybe you did? Could it be the plant has to mature before the chocolate shows up?

Kathleen may be right, so don't give up yet. My 'purple' Japanese hopseed is only purple in winter and green as grass the rest of the year. Your little plants may turn color either with maturity or climate change.

I talked to a friend who is very closely associated with the growers of the Chocolate Mimosa. They stated that the predominate gene is green, so you would most likely not get a purple leaf mimosa. It's possible, but not probable. Odds are very high. So I'm not holding my breath. I won't dispose of the seedlings. We'll keep them for a little while and see if anything happens. If nothing happens I can always give them away as raffle gifts in our garden club ;)

Disappointing ... but just a plain ol' mimosa tree is pretty cool! But you already have one, I know. I found one in our neighborhood while strolling that is just gorgeous... about 20'x20'& in full bloom. Must be the flood irrigation?

The Mimosa tree is a bit messy when blooming. Little shriveled up, feathery powder puffs end up all over the place. But what I like most about the Mimosa is the delightful fragrance that fills the entire back yard all summer long. It also attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. They seem to grow very, very slow here, compared to the south east, but they are wonderful trees. I recommend them for the lawn area, that way all the debris can be swept up when mowing the yard. In the desert landscaping it's a bit more difficult to clean up. Also, do not put it anywhere near an entertainment area. Very messy, and hard to keep cleaned up, all summer long :)

Yeah, that really doesn't bother me a whole lot - the only thing that ever got me P.O.'d was the Bougainvillea trash. They drive me nuts with all the papery blossoms all over the place.

Maybe I'll get a chance to try my luck at the raffle!

Hello, just wondering how all of your Chocolate Mimosa seedlings are doing? I have 27 seedling up and growing and doing well. They, naturally, all are green. 3 older seedlings have started to change coloring. They are much darker than the normal Mimosa and hopefully will grow darker with time.

The new growth on the 3 seedlings come out green but believe they will darken too as they mature. If you will notice in pictures of Chocolate Mimosa, the new growth is always green. Don't have enough experience with these, yet, to know if this is the way things go.

It may be true that Chocolate Mimosa are propgated from cuttings. If these are widespread from Iran and other areas east of there, do the folks in that area go out and make cuttings everywhere? Or do they spread from seeds?

My wife and I are pleased enough that we have ordered more seed. Do not know what we are going to do with them all, just like growing things.

I don't recall at this time where I saw the listings, but did see some for Chocolate Mimosa. A nursery in Woodland, Washington has several, but they cost nearly $100 for plants that are about 3 1/2 to 4 feet high. That is one reason we are trying the seed route. Wayne
