Bamboo shoots growing like mad.
Comments (25)2 weeks later, still no new shoots. The silverstripe didn't start shooting until around the 3rd week of June last year, so it's not necessarily late just yet. Still, I had kinda hoped that maybe the yin-yang or dwarf buddha belly are earlier shooters. The jury's still out on that one. Silversword, to give a late answer to your watering question: We have an irrigation system that hits the back yard twice per week around midnight. I'm trying this year to obey the local restrictions for water conservation, so that's the legal limit. I do occasionally soak just the boo with a hose, and any time my son gets sick of the kiddy pool I empty a few buckets around the clumps. We have also been getting rain almost daily for the last week or two. I may not be spraying them as obsessively as last year (and last year saw a huge rainy spell), but they aren't getting dried out by any means. They are full and green...just no shoots yet. I know the yin-yang is a fairly new and uncommon variety. Anyone else have wamin (dwarf buddha belly) in zone 9? When does it typically shoot?...See MoreFresh Bamboo Shoots at the Market
Comments (28)Anyone selling or growing still in Northern Va. area or close by Maryland? We have LOTS of shoots this year, hundreds of pounds and are looking for where to sell, as well as proper price. We have over 30 species on over ten acres of the family farm, and are looking to increase species, so are happy to trade for anything new, including other unusual plants, such as variegated arundo donax, aquatics, etc. We have a large nursery so have hundreds of different plants available. Comments (8)I have never had problems with squirrels or other wildlife, but my clumber spaniels think they are pandas in April and May. It is a challenge to cull new shoots where I don't want them and give them to the dogs before they take a nice 3-4' nigra shoot coming up where I do want it. Chris...See MoreBamboo still shooting?
Comments (12)I'm fairly new to Bamboo My Silverstripe has put up 3 shoots within the last week, These are the first shoots it has put up since I planted it this year. It's kind of funny. I was excited to see my first shoot on the silver stripe 2 weeks ago. WELL, I was playing kick ball with the kids and when trying to throw one of them out I knocked off my very first Silverstripe Shoot. I was a little bummed but within a couple of days I noticed 2 new shoots comming up. These shoots look like they would be dangerous to fall on. Has anyone ever been injured by shooting bamboo....See More- 11 years ago
